Many things missing here. And very few could benefit from it.

David Bean came up with the idea of selling the Euro contract at 5 PM open of futures trading, 24-tick stoploss from entry, close open position at 11 PM. The only explanation given relates to convenience of evening trading for those in the U.S. who work during the day. (Note: with an unmentioned improvement you could leave it running unattended and be watching TV and have a sound notify you when you're either stopped out or it's closing time ... but alerts or placing symbols on the chart would require additional programming you'd have to do yourself.)

There is no mention of why the Euro was chosen. The author requires you BUY his 2007 article that hopefully explains the theory. He says he can't include the article itself, for copyright reasons; but he surely could summarize the basis for this simplistic trading strategy in a paragraph. The .EL code fragments for even the most complex tweaked strategies take less than half a page of text so no need to buy them from author's website (where he says the needed "GET TIME" coding is provided); he rightly suggests you're better off typing it in (and of course finding the TIME function yourself) because then you might understand how it all works and then how you might try to improve on it (like maybe use a different currency, different class of instrument, or different times).

The code fragments provided are not "plug and play" even if you have name-brand Tradestation (R) because Mr. Bean does not include the EL function call that would get the correct times no matter what time zone you are in. Changing the book's "EC" to "6E" is the least of the needed effort to create a working strategy. (If you use a platform that claims "compatibilty" with EasyLanguage, good luck with that.) If you email Sunny Harris she'll probably tell you how to code in the right time even if you haven't yet bought her books.

Many observers have noted the tendency of markets to either reverse or accelerate at certain times of day as trading "rotates" around the globe during each trading week. But, as Mr. Bean notes here, trading U.S. evening time is usually thin. Therefore, the best average profits of ~5+ or 8+ ticks (from winners and losers combined in two provided tweaks of strategy #1) might easily be eaten up, or overwhelmed, by the bid/ask spread plus all the Tradestation (R) costs, latter one of the most expensive trading platforms in wide use.

Paraphrasing Magee & Edwards (1948): The entire basis of technical analysis is the axiom that past behavior can be used to deduce likely future. But Mr. Bean here doesn't care if the Euro was whipsawing up or down 5% or it was flat all day long in the prior trading day. The stochastic tweak looks at just one bar. That's not technical analysis per se; time is a fundamental, not a technical, in brief. By having a strategy that acts the same regardless of what the Euro did in the prior trading day, he is requiring anyone interested in the concept to do a lot of back-testing of alternative currencies, minimum. Maybe that's mentioned in the 2007 article. The most obvious question is this: Why did he choose the Euro and not the Yen? That question is very important because 5 PM is exactly when trading in Tokyo opens, with Europe sleeping. That "secret" is not revealed ... you have to buy his article to find out if it was even considered.

I read the entire book in less time than it took to arrange the return and drop it off with UPS. The reviewer who wrote that this book is giving away some kind of valuable secret is eerily similar in tone to the strong hyping voice of the author. Secret, shmecret. Baloney! It's a pump and dump. As Bean says at least five times in the book itself, this idea is no secret because it was published four years ago in 2007.

The author mentions Python and Euro Surge as proprietary trading systems sold by his company. They are other systems he wrote which also auto-trade the Euro future, albeit during NYSE hours. It would be nice to know how the returns from this public-domain "one-time $35 DIY Euro system" compare to Mr. Bean's proprietary Euro strategies that used to cost me $25/month in licensing fees to auto-trade at OpenECry. If you have this book, the comparative returns (in apples-to-apples form) can be found for free by looking them up as if you were considering subscribing to their proprietary auto-trading systems: Python, Euro Surge, etc.

P.S. I admit to being angry over the unmerited hype when first writing this review yesterday. After sleeping on it I see value here for people who would like to build their own automated trading strategy. There are very few useful books on this niche subject where the audience would be novice programmers of trading systems. This book does a good job of explaining the evolution of a trading system to improve returns. Simply put, this book would be an excellent resource for filling the huge gap between, say, New Trading Systems and Methods (Wiley Trading) and TradeStation Made Easy!: Using EasyLanguage to Build Profits with the World's Most Popular Trading Software (Wiley Trading). If you are unfamiliar with those other books, you might as well take a pass on this one.

Trading the Euro

I bought this book as a way to diversify away from the US markets, and was
pleasantly surprised by the quality of the content that was offered. The
beauty of the book is the education on how to build FOREX trading systems,
but the value is in the open fully disclosed TradeStation code.

The book walks you through several iterations of failures and successes with
regard to system design, rule isolation, and time diversity of systems
building ultimately leading up to winning systems.
The systems are simple to understand, based upon common sense
principals that give you the confidence needed to trade the systems. The
systems are very tradable in their raw form, but I chose to add some minor
enhancements based upon my personal trading style.

I am a day trader, and run these systems on a fully automated basis off a
virtual private server. On a personal note David is very helpful in
answering questions or bouncing ideas off of to improve the personalization
of the system, if you so choose. I highly recommend the purchase of this
book, as the cost is nominal compared to the value of the trading systems
provided.

Needs a major update

I agree that this book is an excellent reference book, but what I am truly disappointed about this book is the fact that this needs a major update. The list of suppliers of urinalysis products, for example, needs to be updated to reflect the current condition. It contains products and companies which are no longer available. Creatinine is a major component of urinalysis today for liver/kidney screening, but it is not even mentioned. The urinalysis field has progressed over the years, and this book should mention a few automated automated microscopic and flow cytometory instruments to benefit readers.

About the Author

Richard R. Lindsey, PhD, MBA, is President and CEO of the Callcott Group, LLC, a quantitative consulting firm. For eight years, he was president of Bear, Stearns Securities Corporation. Dr. Lindsey is also Chairman of the International Association of Financial Engineers. Prior to joining Bear Stearns, Dr. Lindsey was the director of market regulation for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.?Before joining the SEC, he was a finance professor at Yale University in the School of Management. Dr. Lindsey has done extensive work in the areas of market micro-structure (the design and regulation of securities markets) and the pricing of derivative securities.

Barry Schachter, PhD, is Director of Quantitative Resources at Moore Capital Management. He is on the advisory board of the International Association of Financial Engineers and is cochair of its Education Committee. Schachter spent the early part of his career in academia, most of that time on the faculties at Simon Fraser University and Tulane University. He also founded and maintains GloriaMundi.org, a Web site for risk managers, and BelRanto.typepad.com, a Web log on risk and hedge funds.

Interesting Stories, Sloppy Editing

A collection of first person narratives from some of the leaders of the quant revolution in financial markets over the last 3 decades. Some of the story telling seemed perfunctory, but in other cases it was downright inspiring. Most provide insight into the workings of Wall Street and the more exotic instruments and strategies in play in today's markets, and as such were of value to this non-professional reader.

Poor editing became annoying; words were not only misspelled, they were actually missing and had to be inferred from context.

Emmanuel Derman's "My Life as a Quant" provides only one story and not 25, but it is told with deep personal insight and a sense of humor. It also provides more technical discussion of a number of the important financial models developed and utilized in the market since the 1980s. For those interested in understanding how a hard scientist transitions from academia into finance, I would recommend it as a much better starting place than "How I Became a Quant."

See how quants have changed the world!

Although people may argue why this and that person was not on the Wall Street's quant elite list, I'd say that the authors picked an amazing list of 25 quants, representing quantitative equity portfolio management, market microstructure, derivatives pricing, and risk management. Yes, as you may not be aware of, there are two types of quants, one in quantitative equity/market microstructure and one in derivatives pricing/risk management. They are somewhat related, but use very different tools. The former is less well known until early 2000s (the boom of market neutral hedge funds) and the latter is overly covered in academic programs since late 1990s.

It's very interesting and inspiring to learn how these 25 quants became quants. Many with physics/math background came to finance, due to the cut of funding in hard science after the cold war. Many people became quants because of "accident". Few people came to this world because they had wanted to do quant finance from the beginning. Of course, it's all different now. Smart and ambitious university students aim at quant finance from day one. There are also many graduate computation finance/financial engineering/math finance programs to choose from, so you don't have to go through a lengthy PhD program.

Life is highly path dependent (as many of the 25 quants said in the book). Choose your career careful, but more importantly, choose something that you really enjoy (and hopefully, also something you are really good at) - this is one of the key messages in the book. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone with a keen interest in joining the quant finance world.

Many good & useful, some useless chapters

It seems almost every chapter is a variation on this answer to the question:

i) You don't become a "quant", because nobody can really defin what that is, but thanks for asking
ii) I got where I am today through skill, work, and (lots of) luck
iii) here's my well-polished story

Still, it's a good read, mostly. Many chapters are interesting for the further reading they suggest, or questions they raise.

About the Author
Andy Warhol started out as a very successful commercial illustrator, and became a painter, photographer, printmaker, film and video maker, magazine publisher, author, and celebrity. He had his first art show in 1962, at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles which showed his "32 Campbell's Soup Cans." From that point on Warhol's work revolutionized the art world.

cool concept

I bought this as a gift for my girlfriend, who loves Warhol (although now it seems everyone loves Warhol). She was not very intrigued by the book, even though she also loves collecting knick-knacks. So I looked closely at the book trying to figure out why, and I have to say that the book just doesn't have enough in it. I think that the text is well written and shares some interesting anecdotes, and philosophical/psychological discussion of collecting, but that's not really why I thought the book would be cool. I think we wanted to see those Time Capsule boxes opened up, more shots of his home (there are some, but not many), and then there is a whole chapter on random people who collect things--why is this chapter included? Do I care what some unkown goofball finds interesting? I think this book was a great concept, but it falls flat in my mind.

Disarmingly honest and brave, Bolelli is the champion of pop philosophy

Daniele Bolelli has carved out an odd place for himself in popular culture: University professor, MMA fighter, homespun philosopher and single-parent father, his disarming honesty and bravery in not just fighting but life itself is an inspiration. "Not Afraid" is by far his most personally revealing book and for the many fans of his podcasts, it's going to be an expected treat. For those new to Bolelli, don't be afraid, listen to him and hear yourself reacting to his incredible insights into how to live a life full of challenges and thrive despite the occasional beat down. Highly recommended!!

I had a hard time putting it down, took ...

I had a hard time putting it down, took me two days to read. Emotionally wrenching at parts, brutally honest and motivates one to face fear in whatever form it takes head on. You will laugh, fight back tears and come away feeling a loss that it is finished.

This is a really great book

This book could not have had more of an impact on me if Prof. Bolelli had thrown it at my head. The hardcover version not the paperback. If you don't read this book, and let it into your soul, YOU have given up on leading anything other than a beige colored life. Please don't be beige. Also, there is an audio version of this that is africkinmazing as the good Prof narrates it himself. Its like listening to a being from another multiverse, in a good way. Buy it from him website, it may just change your life.
