That's what, outside of Italy or out of the thought of so many Italian DJs, producers and supporters, Italo disco may be. Perhaps, however, reading the book, including curiosity, declarations and statements of various kind, each reader may come to different conclusions.

About the Author
Richard H. Williams is Professor Emeritus at the University of New Mexico. Before beginning his teaching career, Professor Williams was a staff member for electronic test equipment at Sandia National Laboratories (1953-1959). He then worked as a research associate at the University of New Mexico (1959-1961). From 1961 to 1998, he was a faculty member in the Electrical and Computer Engineering (EECE) Department at the University of New Mexico. His teaching experience included Electronics, Biomedical Engineering, Digital Signal Processing, and Modern Manufacturing Methods. These subjects included probability and statistical methods.

One of the Best Kept Secrets Out There.

If you are an engineering student with a desire to learn about the subject of probability and how to apply it, then this is the book to get. If you are arrogant and believe that you have some superior gift, you may look down on it because of its simplicity. This is one of the few books that actually teach the subject by examples. Also it has answers to most of the problems. The author was not an arrogant person who was tryin to impress his peers.

What you don't say can and will be used against you in the court of public opinion. As interesting as it is to learn to read others, it is also important to learn your own particular non verbal quirks: i.e.: Tonya's book teaches that although the reader may not be aware of it, people receive messages through body language (nonverbal signals) that can have a huge impact in a positive or negative way, just as the sound of your voice may make more of an impact (positively or negatively) than your actual words.

She teaches the reader to watch for body language signals may indicate truths that are not expressed in words. She also teaches the nuances and psychology of mirroring body language. The book clarifies the meanings of signals and nonverbal cues and shows the reader how to use this knowledge to his/her best advantage in every day situations, including the differences in male and female body language.

After reading this book, I found that watching political speeches more interesting, especially when the body language and spoken words do not match.

I would recommend this book to everyone.

Citing both real world examples and scientific research, Reiman breaks down the microseconds of a situation in order to heighten our awareness of how we present ourselves as well as how others' words may not fully portray their thoughts.

As a Marketing Communication student, I am fascinated with how communication occurs. Within our business culture, it is vitally important that we present ourselves in a professional manner. Birren's work has a strong focus on linking how humans perceive colors to how it makes them react. He writes, "Good smelling colors are pink, lilac, orchid, cool green, aqua blue." Birren explores the work of several physicians, scientists and doctors, mainly the German psychoanalyst and physician Felix Deutsch, whose findings throw important light not only on medical practice with references to color but on the whole psychology of color. Birren states that if a person prefers warmer colors such as hues of red and oranges, they are likely to me more aware of their social environment. He labels these as "warm color dominant subjects." On the other hand, those preferring cooler colous such as blues and greens, are categorized generally as "cold color dominant subjects" and are recognized as finding it challenging to adapt themselves to new environments and situations". By splitting people into separate categories, based on their color preferences, Birren finds himself able to establish a greater understanding of their personalities and characteristics. One experiment Birren explores in his text, courtesy of Kurt Goldstein, involves a subject standing before a black wall with his eyes shut and arms outstretched to touch the wall in front. When the subject is influenced by a warm color such as the color red, his arms deviate away from each other, whereas when under the influence of a cooler colour such as green or blue, even though the reaction is a subtle one, the subject will move his arms closer together. I find this experiment, simple as it is, to be fascinating in highlighting the strong effects colors have on our minds and bodies. As well as distinguishing the differences in peoples' character through his use of color psychology, Birren also touches on the effects colors can have on the mentally ill. This section was the most interesting and involved a series of complex experiments such as discovering which neurological disorders were linked to which colors. Courtesy of the work by Hans Huber, it was proven that patients suffering manic tendencies preferred the color red, a symbol of blood and anger. Hysterical patients were more sensitive to green, "perhaps as an escape", the color linked to paranoid subjects was found to be brown and schizophrenics are sensitive to yellow. Birren states that persons troubled with "nervous (neurotic) and mental (psychotic) disturbances are greatly affected by color and are responsive to it". Therefore color becomes much more significant to them, and affects them in a completely different way than those without such neurological disturbances. Chapter 12 "Neurotics and Psychotics" is the most compelling in the text as it relates to my dissertation topic. After struggling to find texts specific to my research subject, this text and its contents came as a welcomed discovery and I will be referring to Birren's work throughout my further research.

Great info and fascinating historical context

Birren's study of the impact of color on psychology and physiology was groundbreaking in its time, and many of the color applications that are now seem so normal to us --yellow stripes on hazardous materials, muted green walls in institutional buildings, orange/ red /brown decor in fast food restaurants- have their roots in his work. This is not a touchy feely book about how color affects your mood, but a fascinating study of color's effect upon the body itself. It's a highly readable, highly informative classic in the field, and should be in the library of any designer.

Lifetime should get a hold of this

Overall the writing is good, and I was never bored with it. It doesn't have chapters, it has Part 1--the courtship Part 2--the meat of the marriage Part 3--old age. The characters are really flat and the sterotypes that she has forced them into are really annoying. Simple country girl, who can never aspire to be more and suave educated city boy fall in love. But its more of an eternal lust, they can't stay away from each other or they are completely miserable. However, they rarely talk as anything he says goes over her head and anything she says is something he knows she is going to say. Their marriage proves weirdly symbiotic.

It really is like a Lifetime movie, however. Very melodramatic and no real deep thoughts.

A simply told tale of a marriage

It's a bit romantic; a rich Philadelphia youth takes a trip to the countryside to paint, and he stops at a farmhouse in the Pennsylvania countryside to beg a lunch when he sees a pretty farm girl ring the supper bell. The farmer's daughter is indeed pretty and he paints her in the rustic 1800's farmhouse kitchen. From there, William is smitten, and despite the disappointment of his railroad tycoon father, he marries Ruth.
Ruth and William couldn't be more different; he is sophisticated and educated. She is a peasant and is uncomfortable away from the land. But their marriage is bound by a rich physical love that sustains them through their Golden anniversary. And through tragedy.
This is a simply-told tale, in the way Buck had of telling the story of people as people, almost divorced from their times. It is not as profound as "The Good Earth" but it has that elemental style that makes for great films and great stories. While this is not Buck at her best, it is a fine tale.

Biographical...sort of...

I believe this book, (Portrait Of A Marriage) is loosely based on the marriage of Pearl Buck's maternal grandparents. He was an aristocratic watch maker from a wealthy family, and she was a hard working WVa. farm woman. She felt that the rugged life was too difficult for her gentleman husband, and did all the farm work. More on this couple can be found in the biography of Pearl Buck's mother, "The Exile." It is, in my opinion, one of her best books. Hard to find, but worth the effort.

A practical guide to the professional application of artificial nails!

A main strength of this book lies in its dedication to the study and practice of applying salon quality artificial nails. As a lecturer in Beauty Therapy, teaching students both how to apply correctly; and produce professional standard artificial nails is one of my main concerns. This book offers superior instruction in this respect. A unique feature is its coverage of the chemistry of nail products. So often; this aspect is glossed over; and it is essential for the modern Nail Technician to understand the makeup of the products they are using; not only because of health and safety; but to be able to use the products correctly and to their best benefit. An outstanding feature of this book is that it emphasises good application techniques and product handling that is strongly underpinned by good health and safety practices. One of the best features of this instructional book is the extensive section on maintaining artificial nails; as once students have learned how to perfectly apply a set of nails; they must be able to maintain those nails!

About the Author
Barbara Aehlert is the President of Southwest EMS Education, Inc. in Phoenix, Arizona and Pursley, Texas. She has been a registered nurse for more than 30 years with clinical experience in medical/surgical and critical care nursing and, for the past 18 years, in prehospital education. Barbara is an active CPR, First Aid, ACLS, and PALS instructor and takes a special interest in teaching basic dysrhythmia recognition to nurses and paramedics. She is a consultant with the Southwest Ambulance paramedic program in Mesa, Arizona, and an active member of the Pursley, Texas, Volunteer Fire Department.

A Monster Book

I bought this book for my paramedic class. It's HUGE. However, it is very thorough. I really like the way the chapters are set up. It gives you an idea of what you're looking for in the chapter before you get started, that way you're not reading aimlessly trying to figure out which topics are the "important ones."

Each chapters "objectives" tell you the material from the chapter that would be on the NREMT-P Exam.

I have read some crappy text books and this is NOT on of them.

Best dictionary for those who aren't great at English

I teach English at a large Los Angeles-area high school. Most of the students entering my class are reading below grade level. I've bought several of these dictionaries over the past couple of years for students to use for vocabulary assignments and/or general reference. They have been, far and away, the most popular (and therefore, most used) of the dictionaries in the classroom. Students love the convenient size and easily understood definitions. Longman does an excellent job of making entries make sense. For instance, there are no lame defintions such as: "mysterious" means "full of mystery". Definitions can be a bit wordy, but they are written in basic English and students tend to understand them more readily than with other dictionaries. For comparison, the first entry for "mysterious" reads "mysterious events, behavior, or situations are difficult to explain or understand". Another feature which I like and no one has mentioned is the vinyl cover: durable, longer lasting than paperback covers of most inexpensive student dictionaries.

Keep in mind, however, if you want a dictionary that contains every single word you might come across in your reading, the Handy Learner's word count is good, but limited. You might purchase a good collegiate dictionary (New World, New Oxford American, Longman's Advanced are all excellent choices) to supplement the shortcomings of the Handy Learner's. I have several in my classroom, but students tend to shy away from anything heavy and hardbound. I've had a great experience with the Handy Learner's and will continue to buy them for student use, as they are frequently "borrowed" (which, I guess, is a good thing as it means that kids actually want to keep them to use for themselves).
