About the Author
Donald J. Dahm is a professor at Rowan University. In 2004, Dr. Dahm received the Outstanding Achievement in Near Infrared Spectroscopy Award from the Eastern Analytical Symposium. He was selected in 2011 by Rowan students as the professor they most wanted to give “The Last Lecture,” an annual event based on Randy Pausch’s book. Don’s most recent book, coauthored with his son Kevin, is Interpreting Diffuse Reflectance and Transmittance: A Theoretical Introduction to Absorption Spectroscopy of Scattering Materials (2007).

Eric A. Nelson’s career spanned work as a chemistry instructor and as an elected officer and legislative representative for his faculty organization. His professional interests include research on reading comprehension in the sciences and measures of student mathematics achievement in preparation for study in chemistry. Prior to his retirement, he served on committees at the state and regional level working to raise academic standards and encourage the adoption of research-based curricula in STEM fields.

Amazingly clear, accurate and helpful!

This book is amazing. Without it getting through my chemistry course would have been far more challenging. This is a great supplement to the course textbook as well as lecture. I like the simplistic style approach this book takes in that its easy to follow and continue on with. I would certainly recommend to anyone taking chemistry! Totally worth it!!

Best auxiliary text for chemistry I've even seen

I've been teaching chemistry at a community college for 17 years. I've been looking for years for something I felt comfortable recommending to my introductory chem 121 students to help them with both concepts and practive problems that are thoroughly explained. This is that book. Very much worth the money and far more valuable even than their textbook. Highly recommended.

If you lack a strong background in science or maths don't worry, this book equips you with all the tools you need to succeed in chemistry. Each lesson is methodically laid out and concepts are explained using clear and understandable terms. Streets ahead of any other introductory chemistry text.

Superb recounting of financial panics throughout U.S. history

Excellent resource for understanding the motivations and details of U.S. financial panics past. Look for the 1988 editon that includes commentary on the 1987 Crash: ISBN 0-525-48404-3. Later edition is simply a reprint of the original 1968 text without this information. Also highly recommended: Devil Take the Hindmost by Edward Chancellor and Dying of Money by Jens Parsson (long out-of-print) for the hyperinflatiory events of Weimar Republic, Germany.

A Concise History of Economic Depressions

Panic on Wall Street, Robert Sobel

Robert Sobel is an assistant professor of history at Hofstra University and has written other books. The `Conclusions' of this 1968 book lists the many causes blamed for financial panics (or depressions). Most are symptoms of the problem, which is a lack of money to buy what people want. This can be caused by crop failure (the weather), war (its destruction), or plague (sick or dead people consume less). A mismatch between production and consumption is the obvious symptom ("under-consumption"). While human error can account for some of these, all people are not fools. [Or so I assume.] Can a totally managed society prevent this? Yes (on paper). But every plan has a flaw: it is based on the past and does not address the changes that have occurred since the plan was written. It can't account for fickleness in popular tastes.

Is it caused by a lack of knowledge of conditions or optimism (p.409)? Sobel blames "weaknesses in the financial structure", yet the Federal Reserve did nothing to prevent the Savings & Loan crisis of the 1980s, the High-Tech Stock scams or bubble in the 1990s, or the destruction in manufacturing that followed NAFTA in the late 1990s. This destroyed more industry than by enemy action during the World Wars. The Federal Reserve System helped to cause the Great Depression after 1929 (they did not prevent bank runs as in England). When there is an economic depression small businesses are likely to fail, their loss of customers is a gain for big businesses. Now that small businesses are mostly destroyed by the Fed's policies who can be sacrificed now? Small grocery stores are mostly a distant memory, so too many mid-size manufacturers. "A Note on Sources" lists the many books that go into more details. The "General Bibliography" lists all the books by author order.

The `Contents' list the twelve panics. It can not list the problems that followed Nixon's devaluation of the dollar in 1971. Could a newer edition cover the last forty tumultuous years?
1) "William Duer and the Panic of 1792" resulted from speculation in bank stocks whose value declined.
2) "The Crisis of Jacksonian Finances:1837" resulted from land speculation paid for by paper money (bank notes).
3) "The Western Blizzard of 1857" followed a drop in gold and cotton production that affected the economy.
4) "The Circus Comes to Town: 1865-69" tells about the free market in stock speculation. Jay Gould tried to corner the gold market but failed.
5) "Crisis of the Gilded Age: 1873" tells about overproduction of wheat and falling prices that impoverished farmers, railroads, and steel production.
6) "Grant's Last Panic: 1884" resulted from falling prices and bankruptcies that spread like a chain reaction.

7) "Grover Cleveland and the Ordeal of 1893-1895" occurred during the worst economic depression of the 19th century for the farmers and miners of America (p.235).
8) "The Struggle of the Titans: the Northern Pacific Corner of 1901" resulted from speculation on the market that led to failures.

9) "The Knickerbocker Trust Panic of 1907" followed attempts to corner the copper market (p.309). Bank runs and bankruptcies resulted.
10) "The Year the Stock Market Closed: 1914" followed the start of the war in Europe and the withdrawal of cash from banks (p.335) and the loss of trade (p.339).
11) "1929: The Making of the Myth" marked a turning point in American history. The farm situation was weak (p.353), credit purchases increased, and stock prices were rising due to margin accounts (p.356). Some foresaw a terrific crash (p.367). The Federal Reserve raised its rate for borrowed money (p.368). The crash came in October 1929.
12) "The Kennedy Slide: 1962" tells how much money went into bonds rather than stocks because of low yields (p.407). A belief of lower returns affected stocks (p.411). There was a 27% loss in paper values.

When her brother-in-law's violent behavior leads to murder, Sephy provides a false alibi to save Jude, but doing so irreparably damages other lives. Second in Blackman's trilogy, this work presents similar themes with the same lack of subtlety that dominated the first work; Blackman's approach to communicating racism is to change instances of black disenfranchisement to white. The most popular white rocker is actually black; white performers must use the back doors to enter venues; popular desserts have racist names. Such a heavy hand leaves readers alienated from the dark history of racism. Jude and Sephy dominate the narrative, though occasionally other voices are included. Stiff language and murky motivation hamper the thin characters from generating emotional suspense. Jacqueline Woodson's If You Come Softly(Putnam, 1998) and Trudy B. Krisher's Spite Fences (Random, 1994) address similar issues, but with rich characters and taut feeling. The book picks up with Sephy, a few months from delivering her daughter, about to be murdered by Jude, Callum's radical, bitter brother. Told in alternating voices—Sephy, her sister and mother, Jude, his mother—this is a disturbing second installment in the Black & White trilogy. As in the previous book, the writing is keenly incisive, though more so, in this case, when looking at interpersonal rather than race relations. But Blackman goes to some very dark places, especially in the shocking ending. Without the love of Sephy and Callum that leavened the first book (and even that is tarnished here), this is almost unrelentingly downbeat. Still, readers who have come this far with the Naughts and Crosses and their segregated society will want to see how the trilogy is resolved—and whether hope, somehow, some way, manages to emerge. It's a disturbing world where blacks, the Crosses, are the over-privileged, and whites, the Noughts, are treated as unequal.

Sephy is a Nought who is also the mother of Callie Rose. Her husband, Callum, was a Cross but was murdered for taking part in the Liberation Militia. Then there is Jude, Callum's brother, the one person who is blaming Sephy for the death of his brother. However, Callum's mother isn't holding a grudge against Sephy.

The one thing on Jude's mind is to get revenge for his brother. And his first step is to get rid of Sephy.

Along the way both Jude and Sephy fall in love with other people: one to get access to money, while the other is just in contempt. But also along the way, both of their lives become even more complex, and even more damaged.

One will be helped, one will be betrayed, and only one will be overwhelmed by their current distress and do the unthinkable.

Dark, emotional, and extremely alarming, KNIFE EDGE gets us an inside look at a world separated by color and where hatred and violence flourishes. A great follow-up to NOUGHTS & CROSSES (re-released in paperback as BLACK & WHITE), Malorie Blackman continues to entice us with even more drama.

an amazingly touching book, which appeals to all of the emotions

Noughts and crosses was deservidly my favourite book, and i was a little worried that this one would not live up to it. My concerns were needless as it is every bit as good as the first.

The Noughts and Crosses trilogy is a daring and wildly imaginative concept which has been brilliantly realised by a fantastically talented writer.

I thought that this book was excellently written and an exceptionally enjoyable read. Checkmate really captures the imagination from the first page. It is a rollercoaster of a book, taking the reader through a whirlwind of different emotions. The turmoil that Callie Rose endures as she grows up is particularly well portrayed.

This book is a fabulous end to an amazing trilogy. Malorie Blackman is one of the finest writers i have had the fortune to come across! I know that this is supposed to be the end of the trilogy but I really feel that there is more mileage in this series. Write some more Malorie!I only wish that this was not the last of the books, i am devastated at the thought of there not being anymore!

By enquiring into the operations, topologies and displacements that shape and format studios, this volume aims to demarcate a novel and important object of analysis for empirical social and cultural research as well to develop new conceptual repertoires to unpack the multiple ways studio processes shape our everyday lives.

About the Author

Ignacio Farías is a sociologist and an Assistant Professor of the Munich Center for Technology in Society and the Faculty of Architecture at the Technische Universität München. Ignacio works on science and technology studies, urban studies and cultural sociology with a focus on infrastructural transitions and participation. He is co-editor of Urban Assemblages. How Actor-Network Theory Changes Urban Studies (Routledge 2009) and Urban Cosmpolitics. Agencements, Assemblies, Atmospheres (Routledge, Forthcoming).

Alex Wilkie is a Senior Lecturer in Design and a sociologist. He leads both the MA: Interaction Design programme and the Ph.D. programme in Design Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London. Excellent, but this whole field lacks scientific rigor

As a middle in a large family and having middles of my own, this book explained much. To my surprise, it also illuminated my relationship with my firstborn wife. I had not read any books on birth order before this one, but had heard the various theories over the years. What this book did for me was make me glad I'm a middleborn. I'll take the package of strengths and weaknesses of the middleborn over the first-, last- or only-born any day. I'm equally glad I have some middles of my own for the same reasons. I also don't blame my parents for any of the "negative" consequences of being a middleborn. In the end, my birth order (among other things) created a set of circumstances that helped form who I am...and I like who I am. My birth order doesn't define me, but it helps explain me. I think the explanatory power of birth order would vary greatly among individuals.

My one criticism of any birth order work is that it's too easy to find famous people whose lives fit a particular mold. It reminds me of horoscopes somewhat. We can all pick a particular sign, then go find a famous person who exemplifies most of the traits of that sign. Doing so doesn't prove anything even though many uncritical minds think it does. While I enjoyed reading about how famous middles exemplified a particular middleborn trait, I couldn't help but think that this is a classic case of a "model searching for data" rather than "data searching for a model." The former is a cardinal sin in the scientific world, but it happens all the time, especially in the softer sciences like psychology. Could an equally powerful set of examples be selected that would argue against the author's hypotheses? Still Salmon seems to be aware of the bias inherent in this type of research and is careful not to overstate what the data tells us.

The Ultimate SAP Pricing Guide - Review

In his first book "The Ultimate SAP Pricing Guide", Matthias Liebich tackles one of the SD modules' most daunting topics with hands-on practical examples, detailed screen and field explanations, and words of caution to guide the reader. The book is written for the comfortable SAP user, and can easily be understood by those in business, functional or technical roles. Unlike other SAP instructional books, "The Ultimate SAP Pricing Guide" walks through pricing set up screen by screen and explains the "WHY" behind many of the features and icons in the IMG. He offers many details in SAP basics such as how to configure objects so as to avoid conflicts at time of upgrade.
As a 15 year SD experienced consultant, I found myself caught off guard by the subtle details I had overlooked (or was completely unaware of) buried in the treasure chest that is Pricing Config. I intend to share this book with more Junior SAP consultants as a teaching tool to help with concepts such as Condition Technique, an often confusing method of determination that leaves many functional analysts holding their heads. The topic, once understood, branches far outside of Pricing and into the SD arena, and can be applied in concept to Output determination, Listings/Exclusion, and Material Determination. The challenge is in the mastery of Condition Technique, which is made easier with the help of "The Ultimate SAP Pricing Guide", and provides a foundation that crosses over into other key areas of the module.
Chapter 3 is, to me, the culmination of the essentials of pricing. Here the author addresses Pricing Analysis, to a level of detail that is invaluable to every level of SAP user. Pricing analysis in the sales document is the visual depiction of all that has been achieved through the configuration documented in prior steps. Within section 3.2, the reader sees the finished product where Mr. Liebich has pulled together a summary of the essential ingredients of SAP's pricing procedure; technical enough to help an analyst troubleshoot their work, yet simple enough to facilitate any business user in understanding the pricing schema. The details in this chapter go far beyond the basics as they continue to break down application of the configuration and master data required to Reprice Documents, control Scales, utilize Group Conditions and other topics touched upon in previous chapters.
In later chapters, "The Ultimate Guide to SAP Pricing" dives head first into advanced concept including Free of Charge, Sales promotions/Sales deals and Rebates, and finally custom modifications in pricing. While these topics are geared to the more experienced user, the author maintains his earlier strategy of providing the thorough but not overly technical detail so that the reader is able to follow along, and mirror the teachings of the author in their own SAP system. Where other SAP publications have been so lacking in specifics, "The Ultimate Guide to SAP Pricing" gives you step by step, screen shot rich examples that won't leave you wondering what ISN'T being said. I keep asking myself as I read, "where was this book 10 years ago when I needed it so desperately"!!!

A Great Book For Your SAP Library

I have been a SAP SD consultant for ten years and often find the prospect of communicating the concept of SAP pricing daunting. This book, The Ultimate Pricing Guide, does a fantastic job covering this very broad and complex topic.

This book takes a great approach by starting with the building blocks of pricing; condition types, access sequences, pricing procedures, etc and carries the reader to the complex concepts like creating pricing routines and pricing modifications. The author, Matthias Liebich does a wonderful job of incorporating SAP screen shots so this book can be used as a learning guide or a reference manual to anyone who needs to work with pricing from the novice to a seasoned SAP consultant.

I look forward to recommending this book and anticipate going back to it frequently for reference.

Matthias Liebich exposes a range of flexible pricing possibilities for SAP SD users. In particular, the discussion on custom pricing modifications in Chapter 5 will be very helpful to many projects as they try to get pricing in SAP to work for their own unique situations. Liebich's treatment of the subject is lucid and should be well-received by a wide variety of practitioners.
