About the Author

Omar Santos is a Principal Engineer in the Cisco Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT) part of Cisco’s Security Research and Operations. He mentors and leads engineers and incident managers during the investigation and resolution of security vulnerabilities in all Cisco products. Omar has been working with information technology and cyber security since the mid-1990s. Omar has designed, implemented, and supported numerous secure networks for Fortune 100 and 500 companies and for the U.S. government. Prior to his current role, he was a Technical Leader within the World Wide Security Practice and the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC), where he taught, led, and mentored many engineers within both organizations.

 

Omar is an active member of the security community, where he leads several industrywide initiatives and standard bodies. His active role helps businesses, academic institutions, state and local law enforcement agencies, and other participants that are dedicated to increasing the security of the critical infrastructure.

 

Omar is the author of several books and numerous whitepapers, articles, and security configuration guidelines and best practices. Are you a network and security professional? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Omar Santos, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that gets you started with managing network security, install and configure network security features to provide additional visibility.

Author Santos, begins by providing an overview of Cisco Netflow and IPFIX. Then, the author covers the different Cisco NetFlow v9 export format and packet details, and includes a detailed comparison between NetFlow and IPFIX. He continues by providing an introduction to Cisco's Flexible NetFlow; as well as, covering the Flexible NetFlow components and fields. Then, the author provides details about the top commercial NetFlow analyzers. He then describes how NetFlow is used for big data analytics for cyber security, along with other network telemetry capabilities, such as firewall logs, syslog, SNMP, and authentication, authorization and accounting logs; in addition to logs from routers and switches, servers, and endpoint stations, among others. Next, the author provides detailed coverage of the Cisco Cyber Threat Defense Solution. He continues by focusing on the different techniques and best practices that are available when troubleshooting NetFlow deployments and configurations. MUST HAVE RESOURCE FOR IT ADMINS!

This is a great primer on Flexible NetFlow and IPFIX for those who have minimal experience with either technology! Omar Santos explains with clear language the basics for Cisco's NetFlow and how it relates to the open-standard IPFIX as well as clear examples for usage. I appreciated the way the book took me from a basic overview for the technologies into practical implementations on a variety of platforms, from Cisco IOS, to NX-IOS and even ASA and IOS-XR. This is a resource for every administrator who needs useful tools and understanding for Big Data Analytics including basic CyberSecurity and commonly available tools to collect and analyze the data. Introducing basic troubleshooting for several platforms was a true bonus! While it is not designed to be the ultimate source for everything with analytics, this book is a valuable addition to any administrator's library.

Good Book for Two Great Tools

Imagine getting a book on some topic you love; say a book about “beer”. You relish the idea of reading all about this incredible beverage such as the different types of brew, its history, ingredients used, great breweries around the world, and so forth. Once the book arrives, the entire content is dedicated to one brand of beer and never once talks about how it tastes. Omar Santos pretty much accomplished this same feat with Network Security with Netflow and IPFIX .

First of all Dr. Santos has been quite busy pushing out books for Cisco. He just coauthored a book on security a few months back so he was probably very busy to put full effort into this book on Netflow. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Netwflow, it is probably one of the best network forensic tools ever created. That was the book I was expecting; one filled with all the different ways to use Netflow for forensic investigations and security of network traffic. Network forensic is very different from digital forensics because data is streaming across network devices at high speeds. Digital forensics usually involves locating static data off of evidence sitting right in front of you. They are two completely different fields with network forensics being incredibly advanced compared to the former.

Cisco created Netflow many years ago as a tool to collect data usage information for billing clients, locating bottlenecks, bandwidth scaling and basic tools normally associated with administrative tasks. Somewhere along the line somebody realized that Netflow can track much more useful information that can be used to recreate events, gather evidence of a crime, exonerate someone of a malicious act and help create logs for moving attacks to safer networks.

Netflow works on many devices besides Cisco so it is a tool that is usually installed as the network is created or when a savvy security administrator takes over a network. Basically, it is an essential tool in this line of work. Everyone thinks Wireshark is the bomb but Netflow works at a much higher level of traffic flow for filtering and collecting packets. I have nothing against Wireshark and use it on a regular basis yet Network is much more reasonable when you are dealing with terabytes of traffic per second on multiple connected devices.

Omar Santos does a good job of covering some of the open source tools like export protocols sFlow and Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP). Both tools allow you to collect information about the data that crossed your network both inbound and outbound. As a security professional and a network forensic specialist, you rely on analytical tools to help you sort through all the hay to get to the needle.

As with all Cisco books, this one is very vendor oriented. Netflow is covered in all types of Cisco products ranging from ASA all the way to FireSIGHT Management Control Center. The different configurations are discussed in-depth which is nice if all your products are Cisco. Most organizations have a wide range of vendor products but at least you can use the configuration information as a map to help you understand your network devices. I was pretty impressed with the detailed information presented in the book but it kind of felt like a cheatsheet at certain points.

I love cheatsheets but I want them at the end of the book, not as the main content of a book. Mr. Santos covers a wide range of security uses for Netflow and IPFIX. I was expecting more information focused on the forensic abilities of these two incredible tools. There are multiple ways Omar shows the reader how to use the filtering aspects of these tools to make life easier. As with Wireshark, you gotta filter all that data or else you will lose your mind.

Both GUI and CLI are given equal discussion time in the book. We all know the real strength in any product is in the CLI, using switches and attributes to add power to commands. But we also know that sometimes we want to see what is happening to the thousands of packets we are examining.

Let’s face it: you would not but this book unless you knew the importance of these tools. The book does a great job of covering a wide range of the abilities of the tools. I was just expecting more specific details on network forensics. Because of my own expectations, I was a bit disappointed on the content. Maybe if I were a network guy, I’d be more impressed.

Netflow and IPFIX are two very different tools and have enormous capabilities if you know how to use them. Network Security with Netflow and IPFIX by Omar Santos is a good stab at all this complex information. These are not logging tools. If you are using them as logging tools than you are missing some serious heavy network help. If you want to learn about network forensics, this book is a good place to start.

The art tells as many stories as the text does

This book is full of drama, personality, and fun.
The cover is already an adventure, showing off the artist's rich color palette and marvelous use of black. Even the front matter of the book is artful - the fox appears on the copyright / dedication spread and on the title page, where he gazes down a lane of trees at Snow White hanging dwarfish clothes on a line. Then the story begins with a wealth of drama and detail. On the first page we see the young, yearning queen, the nurse pouring tea behind her, the blood drops on the snowy sill, her embroidery, her open sewing box, a triptych of the Virgin, and a hawk. The accompanying text tells of the queen giving birth and then dying. Next spread we meet the new wife and the Mirror. The new queen is already witchlike, surrounded by black candles and dried herbs and holding a black kitten. She is haughty and self-satisfied, and exuding menace. We realize that the story is about the deadly power of envy.
As the story progresses we savor the rich colors and the fabulous details as the illustrations deepen and elaborate on the text. For instance, we see the huntsman wracked with guilt and doubt - he's human - and we fully understand from this drawing why he releases her, on peril of his own death. We see that Snow White is often accompanied by the same hawk that appeared with her mother -- is it the spirit of her mother? In the cottage, where we're treated to a wealth of detail (reminding me of Jan Brett's Goldilocks) of wonderful wood carving and patchwork quilts, she falls asleep. The dwarfs arrive and the illustration of them peering, in all their gnarly ancient earthiness, at her pale innocence, is so delightful - one of them removes his cap. There are many more delights, including the witch's dressing table, which is like a dark take-off on a normal ladies' toilette.
In addition to the detail and color, the pacing of the book is very effective - what the artist has chosen to illustrate and how the drawings flow and shape the story.
This rendition shows that children's books can be works of art, but they are above all else stories, and the art can tell many stories just as the text can.

I've loved this edition since I was a child. Too bad it's out of print. The layout for the cover of the newer edition is not as elegantly done. Trina Schart Hyman was one in a million and will be greatly missed.

Grant changed my life and forced me to look at the metaphyscial implications of the idea of progress, of morality as "values" (as though they were a commodity), and most of all, opened my eyes to the world of the great philosophers from Plato to Hegel. This book, the last one Grant published, is as collection of essays in which he shines through as always. Grant was a Christian Platonist who was influenced by Leo Strauss and Simone Weil. His philosophical conversation over the years was with Nietzsche and Heidegger, whom he regarded as having thought the implications of the modern project to its depths. Yet Grant says "NO" to Nietzsche and Heidegger, while at the same time recognizing the benifits of modern technology in terms of its reduction of human suffering. Grant never tires in showing how notions of justice in a technological society are no longer rooted in an overarching "given," a metaphysic to which humans are fitted for. The hubris of technology (a neologism of "making" and "knowing") has devalued life, Grant maintains, so that "qaulity" of life becomes the standard of deciding who should live and who need not live. Hence Grant is opposed both to abortion and euthanasia not to mention genocide in general. Grant's book is not easy. The essays have appeared in earlier forms and have been recrafted. Grant's language is evocative, but also very carefully crafted. His can appear to be a pessimist, but he claimed he was not. This book gives us further inklings of what he called "intimations of deprival" that have beset all who live within the horizons of the technological empire, which is just about everybody. If you want to read a North American philosopher who faced the times yet found reasons for rejecting the finality of this age's horizons, Grant is the one to read.

The meaning of technology and its impact on justice

For those who want to dig beneath the surface and begin to reflect on how technology is shaping us at the very core of who we are, this book is a must!
If you have been stirred by essays of Wendell Berry to begin to question the wisdom of technological "progress", then George Grant will lead you further. He is able to communicate clearly without using dense jargon, but do not be fooled: his words are carefully chosen and demand to be read carefully.
Grant himself has done a careful reading of Plato, Friederich Nietszche, Martin Heidegger, and Simone Weil. His understanding of these great thinkers will stimulate amateur philosophers to investigate these issues further. At the same time his interpretation of these thinkers will challenge the professionals, especially those who have bought into the post-modernist perspective.
If you care about understanding how technology has propelled many of us into living such dry banal lives in the sterility of suburbia, this book is a must read.
I read this book when it was first published over ten years ago. I have re-read it at least seven times since. Each time I read it, I see new things. It is a slim volume with less than 200 pages.
If you are concerned about the disappearance of a clear understanding of justice, then Grant will reveal some underlying principles that lie at the heart of modern technology -- a dynamo that is corroding the western tradition of justice.

George Grant, is a subtle and penetrating thinker with regard to technology and the fate of modern society. In this slim volume, Grant in a series of essays details the need to find a way to think about technology, i.e., the way we view technology and its impact on society.
By discussing a diversity of thinkers such as Simone Weil, Nietsche, Plato and Heidegger as well as that on the issues of euthanasia and abortion, he has shown to us the historical fate of modern society which is infatuated with technology. The picture he painted is not pretty but I believe that one must have the courage to see historical reality as it is and not shy away from it. Only then, can we begin to look at ways to avoid the coming ruins of modern technological civilization.
All in all, a very important book for anyone who is concerned with the fate of modern society.

Paul De Kruf - A sweeping wind

A wonderful memoir on the life of this almost forgotten man. 246 pages in both the retail version and the book club edition. The Book club edition is actually rarer than the retail version which had 6 printings ad the book club version only had one. If you a movie or history buff you have to read this wonderful book.

About the Author
Michael Hague is an American illustrator and writer, primarily of children's fantasy books. He has illustrated such classics such as The Wind in the Willows, The Wizard of Oz, The Hobbit and the stories of Hans Christian Andersen. He is renowned for the intricate and realistic detail he brings to his work, and the rich colors he chooses.
Hague trained at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. His influences as the comics series Prince Valiant and the works of Disney, Japanese printmakers Hiroshige and Hokusai, and turn of the 20th century illustrators Arthur Rackham, W. Heath Robinson, N. C. Wyeth and Howard Pyle. Current work includes In the Small, a graphic novel published by Little, Brown and Company. He currently resides in Colorado Springs and donates his time each year to making a poster for Imagination Celebration. The author lives in Colorado Springs, CO.

Pretty, but clumsily written.

The art is good - highly appealing, creative. Some mild inconsistencies with character design or weird anatomy and body positioning (of the human characters, I wouldn't presume as to the fantastical ones.) Rich with details, very nice painting and coloring.
But the writing is really pretty bad. Never thought I'd be saying this about a graphic novel, but it's almost entirely told-and-not-shown exposition. (it's as if the writer hasn't heard of the "show, don't tell" tip for narrative writing.) Characters, magical creatures and devices, and even plot elements show up out of nowhere, or are abruptly semi-resolved. There is very little character development; we know nothing about the characters except random facts that are sometimes divulged as they are introduced, or as some new bit of story is suddenly introduced. Some characters find out they have unexpected family relationships (through yet another fairly boring expository device), but it apparently has little emotional relevance for them, and none for the reader. The reading experience isn't immersive, as the reader is pushed & pulled through the story clumsily and with very poor pacing.
If I could do half-stars, I'd've given it a 2.5.

This book examines the crime-terror nexus in South Asia, focusing in particular on the activities of non-state actors that operate out of Pakistan, and challenges the conventional wisdom that the Pakistan Taleban (TTP) and Al-Qaeda are Pakistan’s most serious security threats.

Much research has focused on the policies of India and Pakistan towards Kashmir. But surprisingly little attention has been paid to several notable Pakistan-based non-state actors who are increasingly operating on their own, and who have the potential to greatly inhibit, if not derail, the peace process there. These groups blur the line between terrorism and organized crime with serious implications for policy in the region. India and Pakistan can engage in confidence-building measures, but if criminal actors such as Lashkar-i-Taiba (LeT) and D-Company cannot effectively be controlled, a lack of trust between both sides will remain.

Although the role of regular military forces is not to be discounted, many of the non-state actors in Indian-Held Kashmir, such as LeT, are not confined by the same restraints as state forces, thus allowing them engage in more violent actions without fear of reprisal. In order for lawmakers, security personnel, and others to develop sound, comprehensive policies, these forces and their potential to undermine political initiatives must be fully appreciated. This book explores the dynamics of the relationship between Pakistan, D-Company, and LeT and how it affects strategic thought, decision-making, and security interests in the region and explains the triangular relationships between states, terrorist groups, and organized criminal syndicates in general, and in India and Pakistan in particular.
