Andrew Skurka adds to his original Ultimate Hiker's Guide with more in depth information concerning hiking. This is must for any novice or pro who wants the experience of a hiking legend that has hiked more than 33,000 land miles during a number of long trail hikes, off trail hikes, and shorter technical hikes. Over this distance Andrew has honed his skills to be able to engage almost any conditions know to man with calm resolve and know how. He attempts to teach methods about how to increase your equipment knowledge which ultimately enables you to lighten up your pack weight. And anyone who hikes knows that a pack that is lighter allows for greater ease of travel and enjoyment in the back country, or on the trail.

The book is very descriptive, informative, and entertaining.

This is a must have and great resource for hikers of any and every level.

Can't say enough good things about this book -- a must-own in my opinion!

Put simply, Skurka’s gear guide is the most efficacious written compilation of hiking and backpacking knowledge for outdoor enthusiasts (not just hikers!) of all levels and ages that I have come across. The focus is not just on the gear, but also on how and when to use it, in addition to expert tips and techniques from trip planning to campsite selection. I have learned a great deal from perusing the first edition and have referred back to it on countless occasions. I have recommended it to many friends and acquaintances, gifted several copies, and even included it in a raffle for BigCityMountaineers. And if you already own the first edition, the second one is still worth getting as it offers a comprehensive update that makes this guide the most up-to-date on the market (e.g. to Cuben fibre, or not to?). Sure, there are other good hiking books and plenty of free online advice (Chris Townsend's meatier "Backpacker's Handbook" and SectionHiker.com come to mind), but few sources are as concise, insightful, comprehensive, and well presented as this one. Best of all, you will save hundreds of dollars on future gear purchases by making more informed decisions--the book pays for itself many times over!

Comprehensive guide lists not just the gear possibilities but also first-aid considerations, esp. avoiding & treating blisters!

I am a newbie hiker after 55 years of sloth and indolence, the kind who automatically adds two stars to any trail difficulty rating, so I wasn't sure this book would have anything in it for me. On the other hand, when in doubt, shop, right?

But I'm so glad we have this book! It lists all kinds of things that I never would have thought about, like all the different types of shoes/boots there are and when each type might come in handy. Somehow I got it in my head that if I have hiking boots, that's what I should wear hiking, but Skurka makes it clear that each hike should be considered separately when it comes to apparel and gear, and socks and footwear are among the most important consideration.

The part of the book that impressed me the most was the discussion of blisters, prevention and treatment. Boy, I wish I'd had this book the week we hiked Utah's national parks! I scored huge blisters in Zion the first day and paid the price throughout the week in all the other parks... Despite being a very experienced and hard-core adventurer, Skorka is honest about some of the mistakes he and hiking companions have made.

There are places where Skorka does lose me a bit -- his experiences are so far beyond what I'll probably ever manage that I tune out a bit sometimes.

However, I think this is going to be as important a book to have when preparing for future trips as my maps and travel guides are, and also good to read through in the car on the way to the trailheads, with plenty of great "do and don't" reminders.

An excellent learning source for Speech Processing

This book is written from a practical perspective and this makes it a pleasure to learn about speech coding. Practical exercises provided in the book are can be done with the software provided (2 disks) and this makes learning fun. As a beginer to DSP and espicially to speech processing, I have found most books very technical and difficult to follow without the guidance of a technical person. This book cuts through the technical jargon and gets to the heart of the matter. There are real audio files on which Digital speech processing can be performed, however i found that with my computer, i could not play/hear the sound files. The graphical user interface is straightforward and not difficult to use. I'm glad I bought this book.

Good starting point for learning about speech coding

It is surprising to see such a large amount of useful and well-presented information in a tiny volume like this. Although intended as a supplemental book emphasizing computer experiments, much theory is included, even if presented in a cursory manner. There are exercises and projects included for hands-on experimentation with the algorithms that are quite helpful. Unfortunately, it is too bad that the software does not work as promised, as this does subtract noticeably from the total learning experience. Note that this book is 12 years old, so you're not getting the latest developments in the field, but it is a good starting point for learning about speech coding. I would say if you can get it at a used book price, it is probably still worth the investment. It makes a good companion to the more modern "Speech Coding Algorithms: Foundation and Evolution of Standardized Coders" by Chu. The following is the table of contents.

Great book. Poorly executed software.

Another reviewer has commented on difficulty playing the sound files. I experienced the same problem. I found a work around using some third party software, but I expected better from Georgia Tech.
I expected trouble free software. I didn't get it. Your milage may vary.

As a long time user of the first edition of this book (known in the lab as "the Green Book") I was very happy to see a new edition finally. Things change so fast in vet micro, it's important to stay up to date. This edition is just as useful as the first. Same (but update) format of useful pictures and tables. Easy to use and great for organism identification. Have found a few typos however, one really bad one about the length of time to decolourise a stain....you'd end up with a blank slide if you followed those instructions!
On the whole though, a great book and a must-have for any veterinary micro lab.

I wanted to see what can be done and where there might be some design considerations I had not...er...considered! This book was very helpful, but it would be better if it gave information on costs and suppliers.

This book has a great impact on me.

This book is very convincing that I suppose anybody who reads it will have a chance to practice in any way the process of neuro linguistic programming. NLP is behavior modification and this book is more concerned with emotions and in particular reprogramming negative emotions. The idea of changing an emotion especially through our physiology seems backward but if you can put a smile on your face an sit up straighter your body will be able to pick up these cues and your mood will change.

I highly recommend this book to all levels of NLP - novice to advanced. The exercises are described so that the reader can experience the benefits of the portion of NLP being taught. I have already use the "keep, stop, start" exercise with clients and witnessed the opening of communication that had atrophied during their relationship. Very informative! I have had terrible shooting pain arthritis in my hands and three weeks after drinking 2 cups of hot green tea daily
the arthritis is 80 percent better! I am a true believer of the healing properties found in green tea!!

In depth research regarding the health benefits of green tea

I found such wonderful and informative information in this book. From general health benefits of drinking green tea to chapters dedicated to specific health problems such as different cancers, dental health, cardio, etc. Everything is backed-up with study and research results so you know actual numbers. And if it's not a fact, they let you know. I drink a lot more green tea now!

A Scientific Approach

While I often enjoy drinking green tea because of its taste, this book presents some its healthful benefits that are said to be scientifically based. At least I think they're scientifically based. Apparently subsequent information has been published that contradicts Dr. Mitscher's findings. The impact of the existence of polyphenols and antioxidents has not clearly been substantiated. I am not a scientist, so I am still confused on the issue, and this book only adds to my confusion. However, it does provide hope. Thus, I will continue to drink green tea because I like it. If it proves to be as healthful as this book claims, I have only gained.

This book is well written by someone who has solved a lot of ODEs. By concentrating on the most used predictor corrector
methods (A-M-B formulas), he was able to concentrate on why they are so useful. I would have liked to see a little more
info on when they fail such as in chaos problems and how to detect such failures, but I would still rate this book as
excellent.
