About the Author
Yang Leng is Professor, specialized in materials science and engineering, at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). His research focuses on mechanical behavior of engineering materials, biomedical materials, and novel materials processing. Professor Leng has extensively published in international journals. In addition, he has actively engaged in industrial consultancy. His contribution to teaching materials science and engineering is exemplified by the Teaching Excellence Appreciation award from the HKUST.

John Belton, Assistant Professor of English at Rutgers University, is widely admired in film studies for his work with the National Film Preservation Board. He is the coeditor of Film Sound: Theory and Practice and the author of Cinema Stylists and The Films of Robert Mitchum.

A very useful beginners guide to American film.

Years ago I took an intro-level film class at a community college. This was the text for the class. It was accompanied (at least in my class) by a PBS video series that combined film clips with interviews and historical information. Going into the class I had little more than a passing interest in film and film history. But after taking that class, my passion for film has grown exponentially with each year. But back to the book, I really liked this book and highlighted my way from the front cover to the back cover. There are of course limitations to this book. Firstly, it deals only with American films. Secondly, this book barely breaks the 300-page mark - hardly a comprehensive volume. You aren't going to get any information on John Cassavetes here or anything. Now if you have a chance to use this book in conjunction with the PBS films, I think you'll do much better (in fact I think the vids even give a nod to Cassavetes), but even then please note that this material is for an INTRO-level film class, and won't be much good for someone who already knows a fair amount about American film. But with that in mind, the book still has a lot to offer someone looking to introduce themselves to film history.
The first third of the book starts with the birth of film, moves quickly on to the Hollywood studio system, and walks us through the basics of film style (camerawork, lighting, editing, etc.). The second third covers the basics of film genre; there is a chapter about film noir, one on comedies, one on war films, and one on westerns. This second section was particularly useful to me. I could read each chapter, jot down a list of promising titles, hit my local video store, and I was good to go. The third section covers American film after World War II. In this section things seem a little compressed. 110 pages for 50 years of film? A lot is lost on the cutting room floor. But there's lots to dig into all the same. There's a chapter on Hollywood during the McCarthy years (yikes!), one on film's evolution during the emergence of television, a chapter on 1960s counterculture films, one on the film school directors of the 1970s and 1980s, and finally a pretty weak chapter on film in the 1990s. Oh yeah, and at the end of the book there's a handy glossary (in case you're ever stuck on what point-of-view editing is) and a pretty thorough index.
Again, not a book for someone who already has a good feel for film history. But definitely a great resource for someone new to film studies, or for someone who has trouble finding a movie at Blockbuster on Fridays. It did a great job getting me excited about movies, and I imagine its done the same for others.... A good companion to this text (or possibly an all-out replacement of it) is Scorsese's VHS/DVD, "A Personal Journey With Martin Scorsese Through American Movies."

A lot of information but worthwhile if you are interested in cinema

I read this book for my American cinema class. This book has a lot of information and can be overwhelming at time if you are reading a lot in one sitting. I think this book is great for someone who really wants to know the history of cinema and is interested to know how films are structured and designed. I will give you a brief summary of each chapter. The author John Belton divided the book into main parts. Part 1 is titled "The Mode of Production". Chapter 1 is about the emergence cinema as an institution and talks about how cinema functions as both a social and technological institution. He talks about Thomas Edison and the kinescope which lead to nickelodeons and eventually full films. Chapter 2 is titled "Classical Hollywood Cinema: Narration" and is about how cinemas shifted to more of a narrative style. He then talks about segmentation and circular patterns in which Charlie Chaplin's The Gold Rush is analyzed and broken down. The next chapter talks about cinema style and explains details in films including camera angles and distance. There is a whole section on lighting and shows you the different kinds including three-point lighting and high/low key lighting. Chapter 4 is about the studio system which was created to mass produce films. During this time period movie stars were locked into seven-year contracts. The author lists the movie studios that were around in this era and continue to me around like M.G.M, Paramount, Warner Bros, and Universal Pictures to name a few. Chapter 5 explained "The Star System" which involves making stars and star power itself. He explains the differences between a star and an actor. The author explains the characteristics of the stars of different eras.
The next section is "Genre and The Genre System" which starts off with chapter 6 "Silent Film Melodrama ". Melodrama means a drama accompanied by music. This leads into the next chapter which covers musicals. He goes into the different musical forms which include backstage musicals. Integrated musicals include the very famous Singin' in the Rain. Chapter 8 is about American comedy which discusses the different kinds including romantic comedies and screwball comedies. War and Cinema is the next chapter and talks about how the different wars influenced cinema. There have been dozens of movies that are set in World War II which include Saving Private Ryan. The next chapter is "Film Noir: Somewhere in the Night". Film noir is a French phrase that means black film. It refers to an American phenomenon of films that dealt with postwar despair and alienation. The next two chapters deal with three different genre of American film: westerns, horror, and science fiction.
The last section is dealing with postwar history which chapter 13 starts with the cold war. It explains how the tensions of the cold war were reflected in films. Movies of this time reflected cold war paranoia. Hollywood in the age of television is the next chapter and talks about the role of television including the introduction of tapes/dvd. Chapter 15 talks about the 1960s which saw the civil rights movement and counter culture. The next chapter discussed the film school generation which saw directors as stars for the first time. The last chapter goes into the twenty-first century. Reaganite entertainment is discussed here. These films are centered on reassurance, optimism, and nostalgia. As you can see there are a lot of topics covered in this book. However of you are really into films and all its workings, this book is for you.

This book helped me understand more about American film than I ever expected. It brought me from the 1890's all the way up through 2011. Which is a huge difference in movie making and in history. This book has a strong sense of history throughout its pages, guiding the structure of a lot of the chapters as a whole. I enjoyed how it was structured and how the message was given to the reader. The book not only is a history lesson of film but it introduces you to the aesthetics and film form basics. It introduces and explains basic vocabulary of the narrative and the stylistic practices. It gives you the insight to see how things were done and even more importantly why they were done that way. There is a lot that a person can learn from this book as long as they take the time to actually read and absorb its content. It is a very informative book and it keeps your attention throughout. It is not the typical textbook, that tends to be bland and un-interesting, it will definitely give you the necessary perspective to learn more about American Cinema.

Fred's First Fifty

Simple is best.

In 1963 Alex Graham's comic strip "Fred Basset" first appeared in London newspapers and the hound was an instant hit with readers in the UK and in many other parts of the world. In the early days Fred was a strange looking chap but he was a basset in every way and from his viewpoint life was about food, relaxing and getting into trouble he wasn't even looking for.

This hardbound book is a sample of the 18,000 comic strips published over the course of the last fifty years and it gives a fair glimse into one hound's life. Three strips are featured from all of the years starting with 1963 through to 2013. Fred's world hasn't changed that much and he deals with the same issues as always (Bassets, are not happy with changes of any sort!) and the strip still retains it's charm and wit with a hound's heart after all these years.

Fred Basset, is a family affair as after Alex Graham passed away in the 1990's his daughter Arran Graham and her husband Alistair provide the ideas Michael Martin finishes it up with his artwork. The quality of this great comic has never faltered and it remains a wonderful treasure for it's humble readers.
Here's to another 50 years Fred!

Fred, truly a dog among dogs!

After The Chicago Tribune killed off "Fred Basset" for tripe that better fitted their demographics target, I was forced to read good old Fred from an internet subscription. (Older annuals are still available on eBay.) The 2004 Orion book is available from Amazon and Amazon Marketplace. Buy it now and buy the 2005 edition before it sells out. "Her priority is that diabetes will not defeat her. Will it defeat you?"

     This book was authored by the husband of a woman who almost died from type-II diabetes. He describes her struggle and provides advice for other diabetics, as well as a warning for those not yet afflicted with the disease.

     Johnson's wife, Sharon, was only fifty-one years old when she was diagnosed with type-II diabetes. Indeed, she became gravely ill, with a near-lethal blood sugar level, before her doctors arrived at that diagnosis. However, Sharon dramatically lowered her blood-sugar level and improved her general health by making certain lifestyle changes. Johnson organizes these lifestyle modifications into a six step approach beneficial to not only diabetics but anyone wanting to improve their general health. In the section on diet management, there is a sample meal plan.

     There is a great deal of information out about diabetes. Some of this information presented in this book is available through many sources (i.e., suggestions such as altering one's diet and getting enough exercise). However, the six steps are nicely organized and easy to follow. Furthermore, Johnson has been able to observe first-hand how these various modifications affected and continue to affect his wife. For example, he mentions that if his wife has missed exercising for several days, he notices a decline in her physical health and mental outlook. Also, he provides simple, clear explanations of the medical aspects of the disease, such as explaining what it means to have high blood sugar and what it will do to one's body in the long run. There were a few editing issues, such as a word being left out, minor typos, awkward sentences, and punctuation errors. A reference list would have been a nice addition to this book. Overall, though, it is a helpful guide, especially for newly-diagnosed diabetics.

I received this book from the author at a health fair two years ago. I am now ordering four more books today. I am a registered nurse and this book is an excellent tool that I use to help my patients. I am ordering more because the one I have looks like it has been through a war. Hence, certainly easy to see that it is getting used. I can not recommend this book enough. Type 2 diabetes is a huge problem for our country. If you are motivated to manage your diabetes, buy this book now.

Excellent information and system for understanding how to trade options successfully

Investing is not my forte, I'll say that up front. While I love prowling about my Sharebuilder account looking for undervalued stocks, I might as well be a chimp pounding on a keyboard hoping to get lucky. I've read a lot of books on investing through buying stocks or trading options, but most of them just make my eyes glaze over and afterwards I don't remember anything I've just read. This book takes a slightly different approach to the subject of investing by trading options and as a result it kept me engaged and interested all the way through. Given that options generally cost a lot less than stock shares, this form of earning extra income is that much more appealing to me.

The explanations are thorough and easy to keep up with, and as I read along I started to grok the subject matter for the first time. The steps and strategies outlined clearly show how to develop your trading skills and understand market shifts regardless of which way it happens to be going. There's SO much information here, so I'll be reading it a few more times to fully grasp everything, but I already feel very excited about trying my hand at trading options using this proven system. And for once, I feel confident that I know what I'm doing. Great guide!

Great book for a New Investor!!!

This is the 3rd Financial Investment 'how to' book I've read. I was afraid that this one would be like the other ones; a bunch of gobbledy gook. The other were great if you'd gone to college, and have already been in the game long enough to understand all the lingo. Not so much for the average person, just starting out in the investment game. This book was really simple. It explains everything in a language that everyone can understand, and there were no promotional offers guaranteeing that you'll get rich if you'll just 'buy their 'how to' investment and trading packages'. Learning To Earn Extra Income By Trading Options just gives you some really good advice to get started with. At the end of the book, I was really glad I'd gotten it and I plan to implement what I've learned as soon as possible. I highly recommend it for anyone whose ready to start making some extra money!

Disappointing, I was hoping for an overview of trading options but this delivered a mild brush up against the markets with the only details relating to one specific trade venue. Lego---if you build it, they will come.

As a person who just loves to build stuff, Legos have always been at the top of my list of MUST have toys. Although as an adult, I no longer refer to them as toys but engineering projects. Lets face it, with enough Legos you can build ANYTHING.
Enter Virtual LEGO: The Official [...] Guide To LDraw Tools for Windows. In spite of that long and confusing title, this book is a must have if you want to take working with Legos to the next level. In a nut shell, this book takes design software that was developed in the late 90's specifically for Lego blocks and teaches you how to use your computer to design projects.
Unfortunately the original software designer passed away shortly after it's release. A group of dedicated Lego enthusiast (that is the [...] in the title) have kept it alive and are constantly updating and adding to the software. There are now several programs that can work together to design and build models on your computer, create custom building instructions, and even publish your work on the web or in print.
Even though the programs are free to download at the web site, there is a learning curve and this book addresses that quite well. The manual will guide you through several projects and teach you how to create your own models. There is a CD included with the book which makes it very convenient to load onto your computer and get started right away. The web site has the latest parts updates for the library and "how to" articles. This makes the book a real bargain in my opinion. Not only do you get a comprehensive manual and CD of programs, but access to the organization that keeps it going and all of their knowledge base.
Please note: Lego has a program of their own that can be downloaded for free at the official Lego site. The official Lego software is not as comprehensive as LDraw and is geared more to the younger set.

*The* guide for LEGO-CAD

The LEGO-CAD software available through LDraw is awesome and powerful and totally indecipherable to newbies. Some of the software (like Bricksmith for Mac OS, which I *love*) is GUI and user-friendly and very approachable. Most of it is crazy opaque, with documentation that is equally obtuse and often simply incorrect. You need a good guide, and VIRTUAL LEGO FOR WINDOWS is it. The writing is crisp and clear, the book well organized, and authors Tim Courtney, Ahui Herrera, and Steve Bliss walk you through all of the software you need to build projects, render them, and produce great images and build instructions. You can really do *stunning* work with this powerful software, and Courtney/Herrera/Bliss totally bring that into reach for LEGO-CAD newbies. I'm a Mac-user, and still found this book *really* useful. Some of the software isn't great on Mac but most of the actual nuts-and-bolts info translates. E.g., they favor MLCad as their LEGO editor, while I think Bricksmith is *much* slicker for Mac users. Similarly, they go into great depth with POV-ray, which doesn't load on modern Mac OSes at all. But, MegaPOV (which they only treat lightly) works fine on Macs, and most of the details about POV-Ray carry over, since MegaPOV is basically just a wrapper for running POV-ray.

All told, this is a *much needed* resource for LEGO-CAD; it would be *terrific* if they came out with a new addition with sections tailored to Mac users.

Lego CAD required reading

If you want to do lego CAD, this book is for you! I had used MLCAD and LPub before I got the book to some degree, but my abilities exploded after going through the tutorials. LSynth is also very clearly explained. The CD that is included is a big plus for those who have had difficulty installing the software (all of which is free from the internet though) and also includes some tutorial models for use with the book. The additional resources described in the book show that he is interested in getting as much use out of Lego CAD from the general populace.

All in all, well worth the money and the read!
