Most studies in bioethics advocating East-West dialogue have either attempted cross-cultural comparisons or have proposed Eastern philosophical paradigms to counter Western ideas. The tacit premise of previous work on the East-West dialogue is therefore a strain of relativism. Simply maintaining a respectful distance from other cultures is no longer sufficient in this era of globalization. The time has come for active engagement among different cultural perspectives. The Future of Bioethics initiates discussion on bioethical issues that arise from new medical technologies such as regenerative medicine, enhancement, research ethics, and synthetic biology, and goes on to address challenging dilemmas that result from the globalization of social change, such as transplantation tourism, public health ethics, care in the aging society, and professionalism. The volume presents original work by leading researchers in the field, alongside that of promising new scholars; as such, it establishes not only a cross-cultural dialogue, but dialogue between researchers of different generations.

The book is divided into two parts--the first on the progress of biomedical technologies and ethics, and the second on globalization and bioethics. Each part contains four sections on different topics, which feature a lead essay followed by a set of commentaries and further discussion.

About the Author
Dr. Abdus Satter is the president of Satter and Associates, which was formed in Houston upon his retirement from Texaco as Senior Research Consultant. He has four decades of worldwide, diversified experience and expertise in reservoir engineering, reservoir simulator development and applications, water flood, enhanced recovery techniques and reservoir studies and operations. He has numerous publications in these areas. He has been involved in reservoir management projects in the US, UK, Cameroon, Denmark, Indonesia, Nigeria, Trinidad, and others.

In addition to his PennWell Publishing Company book on Computer-Assisted Reservoir Management (2000), he wrote Integrated Petroleum Reservoir Management (1994), and Integrated Water flood Asset Management (1998) books. PennWell Books is publishing his book on Practical and Enhanced Reservoir Engineering: Assisted with Simulation Software.Throughout his career he has been very active in technology transfer, teaching and training. He was responsible for developing and managing Texaco's successful Integrated Reservoir Management Training Program, drawing industry and academic attention..





He was a 1996-97 SPE Distinguished Lecturer on Integrated Reservoir Management. He is again a 2002-03 SPE Distinguished Lecturer on Asset Management throughout the Reservoir Life Cycle. He is an SPE Distinguished Member. He holds a BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Dhaka, PE, and MS degrees in Petroleum Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines and a PhD degree in Engineering Science from the University of Oklahoma.

Dr. Ghulam Iqbal received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Oklahoma. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of California and has decades of experience in reservoir engineering and simulation, model development of fluid flow systems, data integration, information technology, environmental issues, multi-disciplinary teamwork and oilfield asset management. Author of many technical publications, Dr. Iqbal has conducted several hands-on workshops overseas for oil and gas professionals on reservoir engineering, asset management and petroleum basin modeling under the U.S. Agency for International Development program.

This is your general reference book on reservoir simulation. It is mostly up to date (and certainly newer than most other reference books on the topic of reservoir simulation). I purchased this book in the hopes that it may have examples from the Merlin reservoir simulator (from Gemini Solutions; Buchwalter himself is one of the developers). Unfortunately, there were only a few screenshots from the Merlin simulator. The examples in this book may prove to be helpful in lack of data.

One redeeming quality of this book is the content you find in the discussion paragraphs that precede and follow the equations and calculations. These discussion areas provide the real "practicality" that's needed in reservoir simulation.

Convenient size

I would rate this 5 stars as a rental; it was handy to have the little book while I was doing a psych clinical. I ended up buying it because I forgot to return the rental on time and the purchase price was less than the hassle of taking it to UPS. I didn't find it necessary or all that helpful since the Townsend text and Carpenito's "Nursing Diagnosis" were assigned texts and contained all the information in this booklet.
