Essential for Lewis Carroll fans

Lewis Carroll was in "real life" Charles Dodgson, lecturer in mathematics at Oxford University and author of books on geometry and logic. Mathematics intrudes into his children's books, especially Sylvie and Bruno. There is nobody better qualified to explain this side of Lewis Carroll to the non-mathematician than Martin Gardner, author of the Annotated Alice and for many years the compiler of the Mathematical Puzzles column in Scientific American. This book will delight Carroll's many fans and may intrigue many who would not normally be attracted to children's fiction. I also recommend the two books on Lewis Carroll's puzzles by Edward Wakeling; as a professional mathematician, he brings a complementary perspective.

We have Martin Gardner to thank for his efforts in explaining about the author everyone knows as the author of what they think is a Children's book.Known as Lewis Carroll,the author's real name was Charles Lutwidge Dobson was a competent mathematician and taught mathematics at Christ Church,Oxford.
He had a strong sense of mathematical beauty and entertained many in expressing this fondness in mathematical games,puzzles,logic, paradoxes,magic tricks,riddles,and every variety of word play,especially word games puns,anagrams,anagrams,and acrostic verse;all published under the name of Lewis Carroll.Two of his best known books,"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass" are filled ,though somewhat hidden,with puzzles,paradoxes,word play,etc.Words,numbers,games entertained Carroll and those around him throughout his life.
Gardner's book brings all this out to us and shows why he was such an important figure in the world of Mathematical Recreations and as well as other forms of entertainment and games.
One of Carroll's favorite pursuits was what is called Doublets.Most people who like word games of various types will be familiar with these.The object is to take a word such as COLD and by changing one letter at a time,making different words ,ending up with the word WARM.The real challenge is to do this in the least number of steps.Thus we have COLD,CORD,CARD,WARM.--4 steps.This can lead to all kinds of interesting posers.Carroll,actually a skeptic of Darwin's theory,"evolved" MAN from APE in six steps:
APE,ARE,ERE,ERR,EAR,MAR,MAN.
Another interesting poser is to change IRON into LEAD:
IRON,ICON,COIN,CORN,CORD,LORD,LOAD,LEAD.
Another of Carroll's interest was Mazes and we are given a very interesting Maze Carroll created in his early twenties.Another of his puzzles ,called river-crossing puzzles is given.This type of puzzle has been presented by many other puzzlers over the years.

About the Author
Born in Switzerland, Francis King spent his childhood in India, where his father was a government official. While still an undergraduate at Oxford he published his first three novels. He then joined the British Council, working in Italy, Greece, Egypt, Finland and Japan, before he resigned to devote himself entirely to writing. For some years he was drama critic for the Sunday Telegraph and he reviewed fiction regularly for the Spectator. He won the Somerset Maugham Prize, the Katherine Mansfield Prize and the Yorkshire Post Novel of the Year Award for Act of Darkness (1983). His penultimate book, The Nick of Time, was long-listed for the 2003 Man Booker Prize. Francis King died in 2011.

"The Gathering Darkness"

In his second novel, Never Again (1947; with an Introduction by Robert Khan in the 2013 Valancourt Books re-issue) prolific British author Francis King (1923-2011) deftly explores childhood loneliness, innocence, and the inevitable steps toward growing up. His main character, Hugh Craddock, appears to have a perfect life living with his parents in India during the British occupation of that country. An only child, Hugh is "spoiled," precocious, used to getting his way, and waited on by servants especially Luchmann whom Hugh adores even though the relationship has a unique "Master and servant" aspect with "an unquestioning assumption of authority." Hugh, however, also tends to get "nervous" and "worried" and has no one his own age with whom to play. He is also mystified by the adult world around him "from which he was excluded... Pain, death, and hatred were things spoken of but barely understood." With growing unrest and violence in India aimed at the British, Hugh's life undergoes a radical, altering change.

In his Introduction to Never Again, Robert Khan writes that Hugh, "the young protagonist of the novel, is based in so many ways on the Francis [King] of his youth. The novel evokes Francis' boyhood, which is closely paralleled by that of Hugh... In this autobiographical light, the entire novel mirrors the start of a long quest for human companionship and mutual support."

King places Hugh through one ordeal after another as the ten-year-old leaves the tranquility of his parents' home. Time and again he is placed under the guardianship of adults who have and show little genuine care or concern for the boy be it on a long ocean voyage to England with a friend of his mother's who is obviously carrying on an illicit affair (something Hugh really doesn't understand) or staying with relatives in England who resent the boy's presence and have no concept of how to deal with a youth or any desire to try to learn.

During Hugh's "quest for human companionship and mutual support" he is thwarted in his efforts to form a number of friendships. Aboard the ship that takes him to England it is a friendship with an Italian steward. At his aunt and uncle's home it is the cook with whom he is not allowed to associate and a somewhat older girl at a nearby farm is declared off-limits and "unsuitable." His aunt explains to Hugh, "In India you don't mix with the natives: in England you don't mix with--well--with the lower classes. That's not snobbishness; it's just sense." All of these potential relationships are abruptly ended because of class--something totally beyond Hugh's control (and usually his understanding).

School proves to be equally disappointing for Hugh where "he had hoped for something--a warmth or an intimacy, he did not know what--and he had not found it. As at the relatives, he felt there was a lack; but he was unable to define it..." Ironically, when he does make a friend at Frimley Towers, Brian Chorley, it is with a boy from a higher class than Hugh's own. Chorley is picked on because his mother is Jewish. The boys' "form-master," Mr. Burdock, humiliates the two boys "more than any other of his pupils" and "his malice sprang from an inherent knowledge that they [Hugh and Brian] were in every way superior to him--in birth and breeding, morally and intellectually." It is also Burdock who, without cause, finds something "unhealthy, morbid, nauseating, namby-pamby" about the boys' friendship.

The segregation of the British classes is often a focus one finds in King's writing. He doesn't dwell on the topic, he doesn't pontificate, but he is quick to point out the harmful effects of class warfare. At times Hugh's only distraction from the cold reality he encounters in England is to escape in his dreams--much like many of the young protagonists of Forrest Reid's fiction (e.g. Tom Barber).

Throughout Never Again there is a spirit of melancholy that is ever present. Much of it may be related to Hugh's unhappiness, but it appears to be an even greater consequence of the fact that he is slowly leaving childhood behind him and that he is maturing. Rather than be defeated by the elements around him and class distinctions, Hugh's "bewilderment" turns "into scorn" as he adopts an "exultant sense of power and a contempt for those who spend their lives cringing and fawning on their betters." Thus, it is a tribute to King's skill as an artist and an observer of life that the novel closes on an optimistic note. Hugh's experiences and evolution for the duration of the story give him a sense of strength and his maturation is a part of the natural order of things as he readies himself for an unknown future.

Never Again is an amazing novel. The descriptions of India, England, and Switzerland are vivid; the characters are real, their feelings and the tone that King evokes on every page is true to life and without unwarranted sentiment. Never Again is yet another minor masterpiece from this too often neglected writer that deserves the attention of many, many readers.

About the Author
George M. Siouris, D.Eng.Sc., is Adjunct Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Air Force Institute of Technology, and a researcher with the Directorate of Development Planning, Studies and Analysis Division, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. Dr. Siouris has written numerous technical papers, book reviews, and conference papers; contributed a chapter on inertial navigation to the Encyclopedia of Physical Science Technology; and is the author of Aerospace Avionics Systems: A Modern Synthesis. From 1983 to 1993 he was the Editor for Navigation/Tracking Systems in the IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems. His primary research interests include theory and applications of inertial navigation and guidance systems, modeling of physical systems, and applications of modern control and estimation theory.

An Excellent Book for Control Engineers

As an industrial control engineer and a reader of "An Engineering Approach to Optimal Control and Estimation Theory", I would like to recommend it to my colleagues. This book aims at making some complicated topics accessible to general readers (such as engineers and practitioners) rather than scaring them away by lengthy derivation of mathematics without practical context.
This elementary treatise seems to have covered most important aspects of theoretical fundamentals, such as stochastic processes, parameter estimation, filtering techniques, regulation control, tracking control, and optimal control. And yet what is good and perhaps unique about this book is its practical examples and many exercises, which I found very helpful in my reading and learning the subject. This really is a book written by an engineer for engineers.
Certainly nothing is perfect, not even many texts written by "applied" mathematicians. In this concern, I would like to bring readers' attention to the book author's self-corrections of typographical errors which was published as errata in the IEEE AES Systems Magazine, in the January issue of 1997. I think the author found most typos and published them for correction soon after the book was placed in the market. Along with his list of corrections is a nice book review article written by an engineering professor of Argentina (in a much more professional manner than what I surprisingly see in the above). These should help the readers contrast the above unprofessional comments with a fair judgement about this book.

Unprofessional comments on a very professional book

I am using "An Engineering Approach to Optimal Control and Estimation Theory" by G. Siouris for sometime as the main guidance material for solving some practical problems. The book is excellent. It provides straight forward answers to all development and implementation-related questions that have been raised by engineers and applied scientists working in the relevant areas. After reading the comment put by C. Bernard on www.amazon.com I had to take a second look at this book. The book indeed is excellent! It does contain some typos but these typos can mislead only a layman, and fortunately, it is virtually impossible to find a layman among those who implement Optimal Control and Estimation Theory in real life projects. An engineering student would enjoy the way the material is presented, and would not be obstructed by typos. Moreover, I found C. Bernard's comment quite inappropriate. It is not aimed at the improvement of the book but seems to reflect some personal motives. I hope that with the help of readers like myself G. Siouris will fix the typos in the second edition and C. Bernard will learn some good Internet manners.

A didactic jewel for a student and gold mine for an engineer

Recently I had a chance to read Dr. Siouris' excellent book "An Engineering Approach to Optimal Control and Estimation Theory." As a practicing engineering manager, I found this authoritative modern book written clearly and with good didactic style, which should appeal to engineers and students dealing with the applications of optimal control theory. In spite of some typographical errors, typical of a first edition,and which the careful reader can easily spot, I rate this book very highly. Moreover, such blemishes can be detected very easily and corrected by an instructor, and do not detract from my conclusion that the book can be highly recommended. As a matter of fact, the author himself discovered these typos and subsequently published them in the IEEE AES Magazine's January 1997 issue. I myself, which any reviewer with professionalism and decency, brought some of these errors to the author's attention. Finally, this book is a must reading for every practicing engineer in the areas of computer engineering, guidance and control, business management, economics, etc.
