Great Resource for Any Teacher

This book is a great resource for any teacher, of any subject. I had it recommended to me in a grad class on reading recovery, but after purchasing it, it's quite apparent that these organizers can be used for any subject and grade level or skill level. The book has some fabulous graphic organizers, as well as suggestions for designing your own organizers, encouraging student-designed organizer use, and more. It also gives some good ideas on how to raise or lower (by grade or skill level) the organizers in the book. Well worth the money!

can be wonderful, wretched

Adaptations of Sherlock Holmes stories, in any media, can be wonderful, wretched, or somewhere in between. I found the Czech writer-artist Peter 's Kopl's graphic novel of "A Scandal in Bohemia," which is combined with "The Speckled Band," to be one of the most delightful I've encoutnered.

Let's start with the art work, which is certainly key to any graphic novel. The exaggerated images of Holmes and Watson are a early tip-off that this isn't a a slavish retelling of the Canonical stories. It's more like a creative re-envisioning that at times borders on parody. Kopl plays with the source material, with which he is clearly familiar, and has a lot of fun doing it. I had fun reading it.

For example, when the King of Bohemia tells the story of his romance with Irene Adler, the steam from his coffee makes a heart shape. When Watson goes to Holmes's files, the drawer including C's and D's is labeled Conan-Doyle.

And then there's dialogue like this:

WATSON: "Oh . . . Mrs. Hudson you haven't changed a day."
MRS. HUDSON: "But you are getting fat. What do you want?
WATSON: "I missed your charm."

Clearly, we aren't supposed to take this seriously, and so I didn't take offense that Kopl takes the conclusion of both stories into new directions -- blood-curdling in the case of "The Speckled Band" and clever in "A Scandal in Bohemia."

Along the way Kopl livens the story with cameo appearances by Dorian Grey, Mrs. Hyde, the Frankenstein monster ("I am not a monster"), Phileas Fogg, the Solitary Cyclist, and Mata Hari.

Great addition to any Sherlock Holmes or comics library

Beautiful artwork and a relatively faithful adaptation which captures the essence (if not always the minute details) to the story. This will make both fans of Sherlock Holmes and comics in general happy.

The only minor complaint is a paper quality that feels slightly cheap. The paper is more like that of manga volumes which work in black & white but here end up subduing the otherwise wonderful colors. Fans of mainstream trade paperback comics might be disappointed not to have glossy, brilliant pages. It may help keep the cost down but collectors may question whether the materials will deteriorate more quickly.

first in a new series of Sherlockian graphic novels translated from Czech

This is a different book than most English-speaking Sherlockians are accustomed to. First, it has been translated from Czech. Next, it is a graphic version of SCAN, but it also includes SPEC as if it occurred intertwined with events in SCAN. Finally, it also includes additional material. In most cases, the additional material comes as a bit of a surprise. The appearances of Dorian Grey and Mr. Hyde in SCAN may give some indication of the things in store for the reader.

This book is the fourth in time-sequence of ten or eleven graphic novels produced by the author. I am not sure how many will be published in English nor in what sequence other items will appear. I’m also not sure how many involve Sherlock Holmes although I expect he will appear in at least five and, perhaps, in six. In any case, these books are not published for children. Adult subjects and illustrations appear and the graphics are well done and interesting. All-in-all, they are presented much better than most comic books I have seen.

Readers should be prepared to be surprised. The general story lines follow those in the Canonical Tales, but the difference is in the details. It is never quite clear, in this single installment, who bears which relation to whom. Irene Adler is certainly a major player, but who she works for and who is opposing her for which reasons are not at all clear. One almost gets the feeling that Sherlock is a bit-player in a play that stars others.

The artwork is quite individual and is very well-done. The story line is left open and presents more questions than answers. I sincerely hope that later additions to the series will provide a few answers and resolve some of the puzzles. The author’s “take” on Sherlock Holmes is certainly unique and this presentation of two of the Canonical short stories is both unique and fascinating. This is truly an interesting “read.”

Good college textbook with insights into sociology and its definitions, living examples

A good textbook on sociology provides various perspectives on the same issue, rather than making judgments for the reader. This book does that. It is filled with interesting photos, examples, illustrations and charts. I particularly was attracted to the section on politics and religion, giving accurate and insightful definitions of terms such as nationalism, as well as various structures of government.

In the religion section, it quotes and explains Marx's well-known quote of religion as the opium of the people, as well as Weber's counter-quote that religion is a force for social change, rather than a system to pacify the people.

Additionally, it provides insight into terminology used to classify or label various religious entities, including church, sect, denominations and cults. A church is an established religious organization with strong ties to the larger secular society. A sect rejects the religious beliefs or practices of established churches and usually is formed when a small group splits off to form a rival organization. A denomination maintains good terms with the religious institution from which it developed, but it competes with other similar denominations for members.

A cult is described as an entirely new religious whose members hold beliefs and engage in rituals that differs from those of existing religious. Christianity began as a cult. Few cults last long enough to become recognized religions. The Jesus People and the Unification Church are examples of cults that did transformed themselves into sects or churches. In the case of Christianity, it emerged from Judaism, was centralized around one leading figure, Jesus, and was little-understood and ridiculed by both Jews and the state and its religion. It took some century (ies) before Christianity was more established as a bonified religion.

The book, then, is insightful in providing useful definitions and explanations, with examples, that provide a useful framework and foundation for deeper studies in sociology.

About the Author

Dr. Claudio Scolastici

Dr. Claudio Scolastici is a former researcher at the Department of Cognitive Sciences of the National Research Council of Rome.

In 2002, he started working in the video game industry as a tester for Electronic Arts. After he graduated in General and Experimental Psychology with a specialization in Artificial Intelligence, he worked as a consultant game designer for Italian game developers such as SpinVector and Palzoun Game First.

In 2012, he joined the No.One indie team to develop XX La Breccia, the first quality first person shooter ever made in Italy using the Unreal Engine.

Today he authors tutorials on game development for Digital Tutors and Game Programming Italia, and acts as a game design consultant for indie developers and start-ups in Rome, where he currently resides.

David Nolte

David Nolte graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Hawaii, Manoa.

He spent 15 years in the advertising industry in Honolulu, working his way from paste-up artist to print production manager. He then worked 23 years in the video game industry as a game designer and production manager. Most of that was time spent working on Tetris and its variants for a variety of platforms.

He was the producer of Faceball 2000, the only real-time first person shooter released on the original Gameboy. It won best Gameboy Game of the Year award at the Consumer Electronics Show, 1991. He has over 20 published games to his credit on a variety of platforms.

Good book to get you started

I can highly recommend this book to beginners and people who would like to start making games and just don't know where to start. It is a consice introduction to mobile game industry that explains all the basic terms and essential concepts. It will serve well even to experienced game programmers who feel their games were missing something.

Great book on mobile game design essentials

I'm almost finished reading this book.

First things first. Be aware that this is not a step-by-step, tutorial-like book on how to develop a mobile game. It indeed includes a complete project on how to design a mobile game using Unity. But that is not the main focus of the book. This is an ESSENTIALS book that comprehensively discusses the most popular platforms and technologies used to design mobile games.

The first chapters deal with the theory behind mobile games, while discussing the most popular platforms and the technology behind each one of them, as well as how to assemble an effective team of game developers. The book then steps into graphics and sound design, while it explains the common software and workflow used by artists to create compelling 2D/3D graphics, music and effects for mobile games. Moving forward, the book steps into game scripting, describing the most suitable scripting languages as well as programming languages for mobile game development. From then, the book discusses the most popular game engines used to rapidly prototype and develop mobile games. The last chapters deal with balancing, optimizing, polishing, marketing and selling mobile games.

The author surely knows what he is talking about, and thoroughly manages to put his knowledge in a clear and concise way. Just bear in mind that this is a theoretical approach on mobile games, not a practical how-to tutorial.

All in all, this is an easily recommended book for anyone seeking information about the ins and outs of mobile game design.
