An adventure across time and space

The needle of the story is actuall a gateway to another...uh..world. Actually, nobody knows where it leads, only that it's other side doesn't exist in our own world, and that only living matter can traverse it. When the completed needle is saboutaged by right-wing fundamentalists, the doorway expands to swallow up an entire city block. A small town of (now naked, and not just of clothing) normal people, men, women and children find themselves alone and someplace other than Maple Street, USA. Not knowing if they are on Earth of a different time, or have been catapulted to another universe entirely, they band together to create a semblance of civilization with the intent of building a crude version of the needle, one that can send them home.
This was one of my favorite novels, but I can't hide its faults. A large part of the book isn't concerned with the sci-fi aspect of the plot as it is with the efforts of the displaced to re-learn metallurgy, chemistry and stellar navigation. The eligious fundamentalists come off as a bunch of rubes, but the ending is uplifting for all and redeems the story.

Time travel

This is one of the all-time great sci-fi books, and especially relevant now with the rise of intolerant religious fanatics of all stripes and sorts.
A time machine is being built in the middle of Chicago, when a band of conservative religious zealots sabotages the machine (shades of tossing sabots into the looms!), and a chunk of busy workaday downtown Chicago is whisked into a primeval past (or perhaps post-apocalyptic future?). Nothing metallic survives, so there are no tooth fillings or belt buckles or weapons.
The cross-section of humanity thus transported needs to survive so they use all their skills to find resources and build a community.
Alas, the zealots are also transported and want no part of the rebuilding of a rational community, so create their own primitive and brutal theocracy just over the hill.
It's a wonderful contrast between the multi-skilled and multi-cultural community of disparate individuals tossed together, compared with the zealots whose religion suddenly must account for their transportation into the future -- a difficult thing for folks who don't believe in science.

Great read. Provocative story. My original long ago disappeared, and here I am over 30 years later happy to find a used copy and immerse myself in it again.

Classic SF that retains its worth

Costigan's Needle is a classic SF story from 1953, that while a little dated, remains an interesting story. Its strong point is a rebuilding of technology and society from scratch, working from the expertise, intelligence and drive of a small, random collection of less than 500 people that find themselves naked on a previously unpopulated alternate earth. A minor cliff-hanger at the end leaves room for a sequel, that apparently was never written, but doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the novel.

Being manly doesn't mean being macho, declares Atlanta-based psychiatrist Pittman ( Private Lies: Infidelity and the Betrayal of Intimacy ). Here he explains the "masculine mystique" and suggests how men can overcome their obsession with masculinity, achieving greater happiness and intimacy with members of both sexes. The first section details three kinds of men afflicted by "masculopathy": philanderers (who can't make or keep commitments), contenders (who feel driven to compete) and controllers. The second section explains how men become masculopathic. Through sometimes humorous anecdotes and numerous references to films, Pittman explores such areas as father/son relationships, homophobia and the striving to separate from Mother (and thus, the "feminine"). Finally, he shows men how to shed the "mystique" through cooperation (as opposed to competition) and emulation (rather than envy); how to let go of the fear of women and the need to dominate them; and how to "raise themselves" through raising their children. A sensitive and reasonable guide for enlightened men--and those who want to be.

Atlanta psychiatrist Pittman (Private Lies, 1989) returns with an engaging, if not always convincing, assessment of the causes and cures of masculine inadequacy in America today. Citing a diminished patriarchy and patrimony as reasons for the difficulties modern men have in making the transition from sons to fathers, Pittman isolates three primary character types-- ``philanderers,'' ``contenders,'' and ``controllers''--as reflecting arrested or socially damaging development. Histories of the author's gym-buddies and cases from his family-therapy practice, specifics of a difficult relationship with his own father and of turbulent times with his son, and a dazzling array of references to popular cinema from Life with Father to Dances with Wolves help to illustrate these types, with a similar variety of examples used to examine the conditions necessary for becoming and being a ``man.'' When absent, overbearing fathers create men out of balance, Pittman says, equilibrium is attained only by understanding bonding and friendship, and, if necessary, by coming to terms with and forgiving one's parents. Men can then perceive women as equals and can ``join the team'' by working with others rather than by always striving to prove their masculinity. About the Author
Frank Pittman, M.D., is a psychiatrist and family therapist in Atlanta, Georgia. His revolutionary research on family therapy as an alternative to psychiatric hospitalization, conducted with Langsley and Kaplan in Denver in the mid-1960s, won awards from both the American Psychiatric Association and the American Family Therapy Association. In the late 1970s, Pittman championed community mental health as he directed the public psychiatric at Atlanta's Grady Hospital

For the last twenty years, Pittman has been in private practice, teaching in the department of psychiatry at Emory University and in the department of psychology at Georgia State University, and doing workshops around the world.

Since 1983, he has written a regular movie review for the Family Therapy Networker. Since 1991, he has written a monthly advice column for men in New Woman magazine.

He works and lives in Atlanta with Betsy, his wife of 33 years, and a steadily changing menage of their grown children, nieces and nephews.

Convincingly demonstrates what hinders full male development

Pittman's review is brilliant, so different from other books on male development. I sent copies to my three adult daughters.
In my view, male pathology is severely harming us all. Pittman describes how that develops and how it can be avoided. He goes way beyond the pettiness of the contemporary sex wars.

Searching for a Father, Searching for Yourself

The dominant argument in this book is pretty simple, and it mimics arguments in many contemporary works of masculine fiction. Men are searching. Fathers, sons, brothers, and husbands are searching.
Reading this book, I am reminded again and again of Palahniuk's Fight Club, a book that warns us through satire of the dangers of allowing generations of men to grow up fatherless and no way to express what it means to be a man. I think the author of Man Enough would agree that currently the American male population is struggling to identify itself. Our fathers are not with us (in one way or another) and we look to overexagerated symbols of masculinity that we can never emulate completely.
This book is NOT satire. I believe it to be an accurate (albeit a little negative) view of men in our world. If you are reading this, it's more than likely that your father wasn't there for you. This book will explain why, and give you a nudge in the right direction as to how you can work toward becoming a real man ... not a man from the movies, not a man from a fairy tale, not a man from a woman's ideal, but a REAL man.
The book doesn't provide all the answers, but it asks the questions we need to ask ourselves as we move toward masculinity. Questions are raised about why it's difficult for men to maintain friendships, why homosexuality is so feared by many heterosexual men, why men are unhappy in their marriages, why fathers are missing, why our sons hate us, and why at times we hate ourselves.
Men will use this book to understand themselves. Women will use this book to understand their men. It's high time our world recognized the trouble this generation of men has been dealt.
Boys, no matter what your age, read this book and ponder your plight.
We have no great war or great depression to bond us together. We have no fathers to show us ourselves. We look to heroes, and strive to be Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams. We risk everything to reconnect with our fathers who are little more than ghosts.

Warm, Wise, & Full of Common Sense

In the course of researching a book I hope to publish ("Stalling the Revolution: The Men's Movement in the Ambivalent 1990s") I read a staggering number of "men's books" like "Iron John," "Fire in the Belly," "The Myth of Male Power," "Fatherless America," "Manhood in America," etc.
This one stands above the rest on the strength of its pleas for solutions and action. So many books on the subject of embattled manhood or vanishing fatherhood simply delineate the problem through dozens of well-researched, heavily foot-noted chapters then turn--in the last few pages--to some improbable, uninspired "solution."
Pittman's flaws include returning to the same ideas with a kind of circular redundancy, but at least they're good ideas. He pleas almost desperately, tearfully for men to father boys whatever it takes, whatever the obstacles. The reality that the father-son relationship so central to our dominant (Christian) religion has atrophied in our homes is rightly seen by Pittman as the great tragedy of our times. A heterosexual married man, this intelligent psychotherapist throws our homophobia in our face and curses its damage. He even comes to verge of endorsing pederasty.
Rather than pack his book with psychobabble, Pittman has filled "Man Enough" with real-life anecdotes from his own life as well as those of his clients and friends. He also includes commentary on popular films with regard to men's issues. The oedipal conflict between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker is mentioned for instance--along with the poisonous "masculopathy" of the Godfather series.
Pittman may be unsparing about mens' faults, but he offers us hope. The best compliment I can pay this book is that, throughout it, you feel the author's warmth, wisdom, horse sense, honesty, and love.

It’s a refreshing, cheap break from solid computer work that can be integrated back into digital design via Photoshop and other e-tools. This enjoyable, image-heavy collection of international packaging case studies (with a foreword by the always memorable and reflective Debbie Millman), covers a delightfully diverse range of handdrawn styles and techniques from graphic designers, illustrators and lettering artists alike. Four categories are covered, ranging from the spontaneity of DIY and the looseness of ART, to heightened details found in CRAFT and the obsessively intricate complexities of ARTISANAL works.

The best part are the numerous close-up process sketches, explorations and developmental moodboards shared at length, along with backstories of how these diverse projects came together in their own way. In some cases, photos documenting drawing, painting and lettering processes are shown with support illustration or sketches where applicable. I appreciate how the personality of each letterer’s hand was retained right to the final product, as well as some exhaustive variations that were vital to informing what the final outcome would or should become. Some might see it as a waste of time and energy to work so broadly from a design development standpoint, but every sketch is beautiful in its own way and deserves its time in the sun, especially in this manner.

And if that wasn’t enough, the book concludes with a not so little section titled, “Inside Outside the Box” with 7 pages of author Gail Anderson and Joe Newton’s super-tight lettering for the book’s four title spreads. I’d be hard-pressed to choose my favourite single version of each word, as they’ve skillfully and artfully demonstrated that although one may be a front-runner for each concept, there's always more than one way to solve a design problem. So rather than hunt around for the perfect typeface or font for your design problem, the solution might be right at hand. Or left. Or both, if you’re ambidextrous.

Absolutely loved it! A wonderful range of hand-drawn projects that I have been referencing lately and using as design inspiration. I personally love progress shots and find the evolution of a project to be the most interesting part, and this book is chock full of early sketches and ideas by the designers. SUPER inspiring!

Scary at first (to this nonengineer), but...yes!

Scattered through the book are a number of wonderfully informal "kitchen physics" type experiments.
Example, p. 378: "Why is the sky blue?" Pour some milk into a glass of water, shine a flashlight toward yourself from the back side of the glass and see, in effect, the setting sun (red). Now shine it from one side of the glass and see, instead, the daytime sky (blue). It works!! (This is my quick synopsis. Crawford's presentation is worded much better, and is tied back into his on-going presentation of certain physics equations of course.)
So, why "Scary at first..."? Because just a few pages into Chapter 1, you see stuff like this...
sin (psi) = psi - (psi^3/3!) + (psi^5/5!) - ..., (the Taylor's series expansion)
...and two pages before that (at the very beinning of the book) you see this...
psi(x) = A cos (wt + phi1)
...i.e., that Schroedinger-looking psi (and the "phi-1" variant on Greek letter phi) where you might expect the following which occurs in most "normal" textbooks:
x(t) = A cos (wt + phi)
(I've borrowed 'w' to represent little omega throughout.)
In short, when you first open the book, it has a distinctly "advanced" flavor, beyond a normal college level physics text. But against that you have to weigh the effect of Crawford's many "Home experiments" (with tuning forks or an empty paper towel roll bonked on your head, etc). Overall, even a nonengineer might find a lot to appreciate in this book.

(Personal note: When I was around 10 to 12 years old, Frank Crawford, the author, was my mother's landlord, in Berkeley, and I have vivid memories of him, half a century later -- as he worked on his Ph.D. dissertation at our shared diningroom table, and took radios apart like a kid. Advanced and "scary" though his book may look, I know he was simply not like that. Rather, he was a child at heart, with many of the same qualities often cited in connection with Richard Feynman, but minus Feynman's competitive edginess.)

Have fun and learn all about waves

This is a fantastic book. It must have taken decades for the author (Frank Crawford) to write all these things, to imagine so many simple experiments, to invent such instructive exercises. The approach is very concrete, with little mathematics in the beginning. Actually, the mathematics grows with the book in a very natural way. As one would expect, the apotheosis of this great show happens when light waves, that is optics, appears. There is a small kit of quarter plates, polaroids, etc, which permit you to make beautiful observations. The explanation of how Edwin Land hit on the idea of artificial nicols (polaroids) is one of my favorites. Whenever I teach anything connected to waves, even mathematical topics, like the Fourier theorem, I always give a look at this volume. Usually it pays! It is a pity that, by its content, it seldom fits in the usual courses.

For Inquisitive minds

Maybe the best volume of Berkeley physics. For those who are aware of series Berkeley Physics I have to say that it can be compared only with the second in Emags. It is quite an extensive book and covers almost everything concerning wave theory. Although it is rather old it is still one of the best reference books which however doesn't include the application of wave theory in quantum mechanics. The author explains with every detail the material and provides the reader with pictures that make the book comprehensive. It may be a big book but the reader can choose the chapters he or she wants and read the independantly. Although the material covers many applications of wave theory it is suggested for those who just want to learn the basic principles.

Clark Gable, Gladiator, and Cicero

Simon Goldhill has written a splendid and charming book about how ancient Greek and Roman cultures shape our lives, without us even knowing it. Much has been made in recent years of how politicians turn to ancient authorities for guidance and justification in making difficult decisions. Members of the Bush administration, for example, invoked Thucydides and Herodotus during the build up to our attack on Iraq. And, yet, as Goldhill so smartly explains, we need not view the ancients as distant mentors: they live and breathe within us, for better or worse--influencing everything from how we view sex and gender to what entertains us to how our government works. From sex symbols to sporting events, we are impacted by the cultures of our deep past. Amassing a dazzling array of examples, Goldhill is a wonderful synthesizer and storyteller. Highly entertaining, this book is recommended for any general reader, including young adults, interested in ancient history.

Bringing Ancient Greece Alive

A very few authors have the ability to make History live, and in this wonderful book the author achieves this. He demonstates how the teachings and the lives of the ancient Greeks permeate our lives, affecting our sexual mores, politics, social lives, entertainment, and how we feel about love and war, about ourselves and others. Indeed, it is difficult to think of some part of modern living not affected by these ancient people. His writing is replete with interesing examples and stories.

The section on Greek Tragedy is worth the price of the book by itself. Having reread the discussion on the Tragedy of Oedipus several times, I find it both difficult and stimulating, getting me to haul out the old tomes I have from college days, particularly the plays of Sophocles (I have started on "Oedipus the King"}.One of the signs of a good book is that it makes you want to read others on the subject.

I urge you to buy and read this book. You will find it very stimulating and enjoyable and will want to add it to your permanent library.

If you were in doubt before, you wont be after reading this book: The classical Greek and Roman world influences how we look upon almost everything today. So, if we want to understand modern life and our place in it, for real, we must study our Greek and Roman heritage.

Goldhill does a wonderful job of making the connections from the classical world to our world. His insights does indeed help us tackle our often quite confusing contemporary world a little better. Historical knowledge is always useful! Here it is even entertaining! :-)

Life Changing Book!

John Paul Jackson's teachings have changed my life! This book made me aware of foolish ways I had engaged in spiritual warfare. I changed them immediately! There is so much conflicting information about spiritual warfare today, especially about binding, loosing, and commanding the powers of the enemy. I had never felt completely comfortable with some of the ways I'd been taught to excercise my authority as a believer. After reading Needless Casualties of War, I went to the scriptures and asked Holy Spirit to confirm this to me. He did. Then I went to my knees in repentance. I was horrified at how some of my methods of prayer had actually empowered Satan to operate, by attributing more power to him than he has.
Now my prayers are not only more effective, but my relationship with the Father is more intimate. As I focus on staying under God's cover and listening for His instructions, He can send me on "strategic" intercessory assignments of His planning and not my presumption.
This book has actually saved many ministries and lives, who, like myself, had unknowingly thrown themselves directly in the sights of the enemy's artillery. I have given this book to many ministers and intercessors. They have thanked me for it.

Required Reading On Spiritual Warfare !

Seldom has a book about spiritual warfare been as timely and relevant as this one.
I have read many excellent books on the subject, but this really is an absolute must read!
Spiritual warfare is an aspect that cannot be avoided by Christians, and wisdom in such matters is absolutely paramount to prevent us from unwittingly falling into Satan's snares and to protect us from Satan's onslaughts.
John Paul Jackson examines the parameters of our spiriutal authority in facing Satan and his demonic realm, together with the practical guidelines that need to be followed to proceed in such matters on a Biblical basis.
A number of real-life stories are referred to in what is a highly recommended read. All Christians need to access the information provided in this book. Kindest regards.

Wow - An eye opener that increased my confidence

This book really brought me a lot of confidence with regard to spiritual warefare, as it clearly explains boundaries that the Lord gives us. John Paul Jackson did a great job of highlighting the "do's and dont's" in a positive, uplifting way that tells it straight, and I found myself filled with more faith to ask God to move and for his will to be done.

A Good Reference But Not A Primer

This book would be a good addition to your library, but if you are just learning DMX don't look at it as your first book. Start your learning process with a good book on MDX fundamentals, if in fact one exists, then use this book as an excellent means of polishing your knowledge. There is much to be learned, but only if you have a good grasp of the elementary fundamentals of DMX. If DMX is to be your specialty, this book belongs in your library.

After almost a year of GZCL programming

I ran gzcl-style programming for 7ish months in 2013, and have been running it for the past several months again. I've done extremely well with this style programming (I've advanced my total ~200lbs to just shy of 1300lbs @ 225lbs), and am continuing to progress well. There are a few things about this method that one needs to understand.

1. This is a method, not a program. Cody actually has a blog post somewhere with almost this exact title. There is not weight progression built into this method. Instead, this method is adaptable to any progression-scheme (whether it's linear progression for beginner lifters, or something more complicated for more advanced ones). There are spreadsheets floating around for specific progressions, and even those are highly adaptable to your goals. On one hand, this is a weakness of this method, as some may try to run it and get frustrated because they aren't implementing a progression correctly. On the other hand, learning how different progression schemes work and implementing them will make you a much better lifter, both physically and mentally.

2. This program has lots of volume, much of it at a heavy weight. Other programs, such as 5/3/1, may require you to do 12-15 reps at 85% of your maxes each month. With gzcl, you'll be doing this every week (if you're adventurous, possibly twice per week per main lift). This makes recovery harder, especially at first, but if you are able to recover enough (eat and sleep!), you'll be able to gain a lot of strength and size very quickly. There are a few intro templates he's written to help you build up to the volume as well.

3. Once again, YOU WILL HAVE TO THINK ABOUT YOUR PROGRAMMING. Whatever you do, your workouts will need to be tailored to your specific goals. When I felt that my squats were lagging, I programmed squatting three days/week for a few months. When I thought my bench was slow off my chest, I programmed pressing three days a week, with extra paused work and overhead work.

All that said, I've progressed more with gzcl than I did with Cube, Sheiko, or Madcow. I'm continuing to run this style of programming, though my focus is shifting away from powerlifting. For the next several months, at least, I'm focused on strongman training. And you know what? I'm still using gzcl for all of it.

No BS, well explained process for writing your own programs

Most strength training e-books I've come across are written like a caveman explaining how he fights, "I man, I swing club, you swing club, you man!" Instead of books like that, with 50 pages of anecdotes soul-searching and chest-thumping followed by a sample program tucked at the end, Cody takes you through the logical progression of building a program yourself.

The tone is conversational (not listing out facts and processes like a textbook or talking at you like an authority), more akin to a seminar or a tradesman (carpenter or chef even) explaining things to an apprentice: Here's the rough idea of what we're going to make, here's some background - things that work well and things that don't work as well, here's the guidelines, and here's what a completed project looks like.

Each segment of the final structure has some rules about its construction. For the top sets, at least this many reps at this intensity, focusing on your primary lifts. But how you set them up in your own program is up to you - maybe you really liked 5/3/1 or Starting Strength, so you build your top sets to resemble those. Each supporting tier of lifts expands the flexibility - you can tweak the ingredients because someone explained the how & why of the recipe.

All in all, a great 'mindset' piece. The book might not contain 20 different programs worked out to the pound, but it does provide a concise framework for consistent progress, peaking & deloading with flexibility.

good essay and good into to a training philosophy

I'm an intermediate lifter. By that I mean I have been lifting for years and no longer make linear gains in my weight progression. I was looking for a new program and this caught my eye. The author described his philosophy pretty well and conceptualized his program as a pyramid. The author compared and contrasts his training style with Wendler's 5/3/1 and makes some good points. This would be a heck of a lot more useful if it were described as detailed as 5/3/1. The essay could use a many more example routines and more detailed set/rep/weight breakdowns. But for $1 I'm quite happy
